THE DAYLIGHT ORANGE is a little it of everything really. With that the band has released a recent track titled "Squeaky Little Disco", with much more time to write and record newer working's soon enough. There is so much more the band has to say about themselves and the music they create as well.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
The Daylight Orange has been a revolving door of collaborators for sometime now but it’s beating heart from the start has predominantly been Dan & Matt. We’ve been writing & recording for years since we started experimenting with old 4-tracks plugged together and doing mini-disc remixes for friends. We moved around a bit & I went to London to cut my teeth & do the band thing playing dive bars & the University circuit for a few years which was a lot of fun and got me into a lot of trouble. We reconvened a few years later and hit on an idea to run a bar in a bid to stop hemorrhaging cash on nights out…the bar had to have a rehearsal space and be sympathetic to late night noise & that’s where we fanned the flame for The Daylight Orange & how we ran into Andy. This man hit’s a hard drum and could hold his drink so after a few demos had been passed around we settled in to the rehearsal room in the early hours and it all clicked. We’ve also got a new recruit on Bass called Matt Hombre. He’s a demon & we’ve known him for years but have always been in different bands. Good timing this time. I mean a lot of people play with a lot of different musicians, but when it’s right & you’re buzzing off it and you know you’ve got a little bit of magic…..You’re lucky.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
Ha. I’ve always liked a “The” in a band name so that part was easy. We’d just got out of the sea after a few hours surfing in a place called Putsborough in North Devon. Late Evening. Exhausted. Elated. Summer vibes flowing. The sun was low in the sky and the whole place was alight and bathed in this beautiful Orange filter. Band name sorted : The Daylight Orange.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We’re still based in The South West. I’ve moved out into the sticks not too far from Exeter, Devon. Matt keeps moving as close to the sea as possible to get a dawn patrol surf in & Andy is taking time out in Athens at the moment. The South West is super creative in all the arts and the music scene is testament to that. We’ve got The Cavern Club in Exeter, The Phoenix, as well as some decent large venues and more festivals than you can shake a stick at too! If I had to recommend a decent local band….We used to gig a lot with a local three piece who called themselves “Rocket Baby Dolls” at the time. They back combed hair and rocked some heavy eyeliner…..they go by the name “Muse” now. You should check them out if you haven’t heard of them !
4. How would you describe your style?
Heavy Pop destroyers ? Stoner Pop ? We try to join the dots between 60s Psychedelia,70s bar soaked blues and a dose of 90s Indie for good measure. Itchy grooves that get under your skin like a good carpet burn you know ? I think it’s the sort of music that sounds good in a pair of headphones that is just a little too loud and they start to rattle your balance a bit.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
We put out a handful of DIY recordings which got played on BBC Introducing and luckily got on the radar of The Animal Farm Studios in London where we recorded three songs last summer. The most recent release being “Squeaky Little Disco”. We need to sell off the remainder of our record collections and get some more studio time booked ASAP. Expect Heavy drums, Backwards guitars, Bits of Piano in your hair and choruses that will either break your heart or give you the strength of ten bears.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
Thanks to the unfortunate turn of events the world over if anything positive has come from lockdown it’s having the time to focus on writing, recording, trying new ideas out and dusting off old analog synth’s to plug guitars in for wonky frequencies. Yeah we’ve got some great ones in the bag that need to see the light of day yesterday…
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
Such a bummer as we were really geared up for promoting these songs after we recorded them. We were hungry for it and match fit. We were looking forward to playing some festival dates so much. Every musician and everybody that is part of the music industry is hanging on my the tips of their fingers right now and will all come out fighting. Can you imagine all the new music and fire that will hit the streets when we’re allowed to play live in venues again. It’s going to be massive. It’s going to be as good as it ever was. X 10.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
We need to get back in the studio as soon as humanly possible and play live music loud shortly after that. Complete vinyl fiends as well so we need to get some Daylight pressed in the very near future. Expect an album. We’ve got a session to record for BBC Introducing coming up so that’s as close as we’re going to get for awhile I think.
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
All major platforms. Available on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, Soundcloud to stream or you can go retro and buy the single too!
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
Think I’d like the listener to forget where they are for a few minutes and escape and get lost in our Stoner Pop bubble. At loud volume obviously!
