Speak Easy Circus Discusses of Music That Isn't Just Clownin Around

SPEAK EASY CIRCUS is a band of musicians whose time together, combines a variety of genres, with an EP and single out already. The band goes into discussion about all new music and what other plans are in-store for them.

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

Jack - Guitar/vocals/keys

Jon - Sax/Keys

Frazer - Drums

Chats - Bass

Jack, Jon and Chats met playing in bands in Glasgow, and were introduced to Frazer through a mutual friend. When it came time to put together a band to play the Speak Easy Circus songs live, Jack reached out and the band as we know it was formed.

2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?

The name came about because we wanted to create a name that wasn’t something that already existed, we wanted to have something that would create a unique image in people’s mind that would reflect the eclectic mix of music we wanted to make. So we picked ‘Speak Easy Circus’ because we thought it was a strange enough combination of words that it might make people think twice.

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

We are based in Glasgow, which has a very strong music scene. Some particular acts that we have been listening to recently are corto.alto, who have a really cool nu-jazz feel and are lead by Liam Shortall. Fat Suit are also an incredible modern jazz band. Also Joesef, who has been blowing up recently. There are honestly so many bands in Glasgow that are great, Beggar in the heights, Charlotte Marshall and the Hot 5, Walt Disco, Baby Taylah to name a few.

4. How would you describe your style?

Our sound is based on a mix of the individual members influences, all of our members come from very different musical backgrounds, rock, funk, soul, and jazz to name a few. Ultimately we want to be an eclectic group who aren’t defined by one genre, so we have songs that are acoustic ballads and songs that are supposed to make you dance, all tied together with socially conscious lyrics and story-telling. Basically we want to make music we would like to listen to ourselves.

5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?

In 2019 we released an EP, ‘Bravo Tango Charlie’, which was recorded as a solo project before the full live band existed, and in 2020 we released our single ‘Neon in Daylight’ with the full band involved. Both projects were recorded and produced entirely ourselves in our flat, something we are very proud of, however we are very excited to have worked with The Animal Farm down in London on our upcoming projects.

6. Do you have any new music in the works?

Yes! We have new music coming in 2021, the first of which is our single ‘Lions Should Hunt’ which is going to be released on the 22nd of January.

7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?

Obviously at the moment we have had our live plans put on hold, like the rest of the world. However we are optimistic that in 2021 we will be able to play some more gigs and festivals in Scotland and hopefully further afield.

8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

We have many plans, some ridiculously ambitious and some more realistic! Really we would like to be able to keep developing as a band, playing bigger shows and hopefully reaching more people.

9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

You can find us on all streaming sites, including Spotify and Apple Music.

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

When people first listen to our music the initial thing we would like them to think is that this is something different and unique, something that they might not have heard before. We want to make music that we would listen to, and the music that we listen to is eclectic, exciting, meaningful and doesn’t take itself too seriously all at the same time, so if people went away from our music thinking anything like that then we would take that as a win!
