Indie pop rockers JUST SUPPOSE have an all new EP out, with an all new single as well. They also like many bands, want to get back out and do some shows, but for now will continue to create and release music! The band chats about all of this plus more.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
The band kinda started as a small jam between Fraser and Ewan. After that we managed to get a drummer involved in the form of Lewis and we had a bass player for a while (who was coincidentally also called Ollie) who turned out not to be so reliable so we got a different Olli instead.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
Ewan suggested we be called “Juxtapose” but Fraser said “that’s too metal” so we settled on Just Suppose as a joke, and it just sorta stuck. In all honesty it does accurately represent the band’s ideas. Just Suppose means looking into the future, and that can be done in a hopeful way such as “just suppose I won the lottery” or it can be playing through future scenarios in your head and that can be unhealthy, and a lot of our lyrics explore these scenarios.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We are all from different parts of the UK: Ewan from Scotland, Lewis from Wales, Olli from the Midlands and Fraser from Hull. We all met at the University of Huddersfield so that's where we call our base. Huddersfield's music scene is criminally underrated, the University of Huddersfield is often regarded within the top 50 worldwide for music so it's definitely important to the town and this means there's an abundance of bands generated from the university itself, so there's always a gig on and most of them are usually full. One benefit as well is that Huddersfield is really close to Manchester and Leeds and we absolutely love playing both cities - the atmosphere is so unique and different in each. Hauling the drum kit on the train though, that isn't fun.
4. How would you describe your style?
Our catchphrase/ethos for our sound has always been ‘Uplifting melancholy’. I'd say that we fall into the broad genre of guitar based indie, but sit comfortably on the line between indie rock and indie-pop. It's always been a mission for the band to be unique in this sense, for example looking at two of our previous singles ‘Catching Sunlight’ and ‘Shockwaves’ you can see the depth and variety of sounds we can produce.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
We released an EP, Breathing Space, consisting of four tracks in 2018 (which we have since taken down from streaming platforms as we felt the recordings weren’t up to our current standards, so you’ll need to see us live to hear those!). Three singles followed - Catching Sunlight, Shockwaves in 2019 - and most recently No Cause for Alarm towards the end of last year. Expect soaring highs and contemplative lows as we take you on an emotional journey. (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3WFzfBB7IqWcPK41RPC64d?si=F7h26uQ6SJ2uhvQpyA3cjg).
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
Yeah we do! It’s called Icarus, which is a song about the fear of flying too high, losing it all and having to start over again - keeping a lid on your hopes and dreams to avoid becoming an “Icarus”. We’re really pleased with how this one has turned out and it’s coming to all major streaming platforms on April 23rd 2021! (smarturl.it/jsicarus)
And keep your ears to the ground as there could be more where that came from ;)
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
At the moment we don’t have any shows booked in, (due to current circumstances) but it's definitely something we have a passion for and something we are excited to get back into when it is safe to do so. We are definitely hoping to come back to a healthy list of shows, plus our favorite venue ‘The Parish’ in Huddersfield has just recently relocated so that's high up on our list of places to play.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
We plan on really pushing ourselves this year as a band to be the best version of ourselves that we can, work on our live shows, write more music - maybe even with an album in mind. The pandemic has really hit us hard (as it did for everyone) but we think we’re going to come back all the stronger for it. We are all coming back to this band as more developed and established individuals and we all hope we can achieve big things within the coming years, but we know that we will only get out the work we put in.
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
You can find us on all the major streaming services - Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music, TikTok - you name it. We also have a chilled out acoustic cover of our song “Catching Sunlight” on our YouTube channel so make sure to check that out too! https://linktr.ee/justsuppose. We don’t have any merchandise yet, but we hope to change that soon!
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
We’d like the listener to feel as if a story has been told, or an idea has been explored, and it’s somewhat relatable and is an experience that can be shared. We want our music to help you through a down day but as well be there for when you are having a good time with your friends. Our music is meant to embody both feelings and making the listener feel better and having a story to relate to goes a long way in our opinion.
