Darken waved synth-pop band WINTERBEACH have a single, and an upcoming LP coming up real soon. The band has mostly been keeping up with creating music, and planning ahead for the distant future such as more music and show playing! The band talks about their furthering plans and more.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
WinterBeach are Tiam on vocals, Baz on drums and Angel on keyboards. All three grew up in Bergen, Norway and met in primary school, when their early musical heroes included Gene Simmons, Blackie Lawless and Morten Harket. The trio forged their separate paths through a progression of black metal bands, Classical music, Theatre, Eurodisco projects and synthesizer wizardry, some of which achieved not inconsiderable international success, before realizing that they ought to combine their disparate influences..
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
Well, it's almost impossible to find band names nowadays, since almost all the obvious cool names already have been taken! But the band always knew that a special and appropriate band name was waiting for them - somewhere, they just had to find it. So a list was made of all sorts of cool potential band names they came across and the list didn’t stop before they had 1077 names on the block! After googling all the candidates, it turned out that only 1 of them was available! The choice was easy. And by a strange coincidence WinterBeach fits perfectly with the mood the music stands for; Cold in a summery way ... Just like the Norwegian summers.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
WinterBeach hails from Bergen, on the western coast of Norway. A vibrant music city with many great artists: Kygo, Alan Walker, Kings of Convenience, Sigrid, Aurora and not to forget the world famous black metal scene with bands like Burzum, Immortal etc.
4. How would you describe your style?
WinterBeach are a Norwegian darkwave synthpop band whose orchestral songs combine melancholic Nordic EDM with majestic pop refrains about monumental struggles. Their expansive and icily cinematic soundscapes are as extreme as the weather in Bergen.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
The single «Sky & Stars» is the first single to be released from the upcoming LP; "Playing Dead". This is the debut LP of WinterBeach and will be released by Animal Farm in May. The band has knowledge of several different music styles ranging from classical music, through every kind of pop & rock to black metal. This strange and varied background have resulted in something that sounds like Muse without guitars, Depeche Mode with pop refrains and Keane after electroshock treatment. So even if the music might sound familiar at first glance it also can sound very different at the same time. Hopefully in a good way.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
We always write music. However, in the last year it has been extra complicated as corona restrictions has closed our rehearsal room. But luckily WinterBeach are a 100% synthetic band and are just as happy to rehearse digitally as physically! In other words, there are many exciting songs going on ...
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
Wise of corona damage, we have not planned anything yet. But it is obvious that as soon as the world becomes normal again WinterBeach will go gigging. We can hardly wait any longer and are really looking forward to meeting real people again.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
“First we take Manhatten, then we take Saturn”. Haha, but that’s in a very very very very very long time perspective of course ;) The more realistic and imminent plans is to release our first LP and promote it until we get green in our faces. After that, we look forward to working closely with the talented people at Animal Farm to further refine our music style. In the future WinterBeach hope to sound even lighter, even darker, even more pop and even more rock?
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
WinterBeach is distributed by Animal Farm and will be available on all possible digital platforms such as Spotify, Deezer, iTunes etc.
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
We hope that new listeners will find that WinterBeach sounds a little different and unique? Although one can hear references to one or the other. A bit 80s, a bit 90s, a bit Britpop, a bit Nordic pop, a bit EDM, a bit metal, a bit Euro Disco, a bit goth, but at the same time something completely different. The reason is probably because WinterBeach has challenged themselves by stripping their music 100% for guitars, which means that they have to think completely new when it comes to arrangements compared to what is the industry standard.
