Taine Joso Discusses Singles, EP, Plus More!

Formed just a few years ago TAINE JOSO have released a handful of single's thus far, with more tracks in the works that could lead to an EP. After that release, more music will come forth for an album with touring to follow as well. The band discusses these things all below.

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

The four of us met during our time at Uni, with the band forming in 2018.  Dan and Taine met in an ensemble group and really hit it off, so they decided to jam outside of it in their free time. The initial jams would end up forming the basis for many of our early song structures. Then we eventually met Alex, who needed a group for his end of year performance, so he joined and turned our duo into a trio. As he was more comfortable with lead guitar Alex switched from bass and we managed to find a new bass player who joined us briefly for a couple months but ended up leaving unfortunately. Then Alex recommended our current bassist Chris who also attended our university, and the line-up has remained unchanged ever since. We’ve played venues all around Brisbane for the past four years especially in Fortitude Valley. We’ve also played some venues in the Sunshine Coast and on the Gold Coast. Unfortunately we haven’t really had the opportunity to fully commit ourselves to an east coast tour of the country with this COVID business but we are all excited to play some shows in Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne and Canberra.

2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?

The name derives from the singer’s name really. Just his first name and a shortened version of his last name. We couldn’t think of a decent name so we just went with it. We believe it sounds unique though, so that helps. Its kind of a Bon Jovi situation.

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

We’re based in Brisbane Australia! There’s quite a diversity of different genres on the scene but I feel its pre-dominantly rock based whether that’s indie or hard/alt rock. Yeah, there’s many local bands we enjoy. Roadhouse, Caligula’s Horse and Annoying Neighbours are just a few we get around! There are some great solo artists like Arran McNamara, Nathan MT.

4. How would you describe your style?

I’d say we’re a blend of 70’s rock and 90’s rock/progressive metal. If Led Zeppelin, Soundgarden, Tool and Jeff Buckley had some sort of mutant, Frankenstein baby.

5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?

At this stage we’ve released 4 singles! They all vary in tone and arrangement. There’s a mix between some more upbeat numbers and some slower more ballad-like compositions. Our latest release ‘Cattle’ seems like another variance. It’s a bit heavier and more reminiscent of some sort of metal-driven summoning ritual than say our past releases which still possessed traces of classic rock. It’s definitely indicative of more alternative influences. A sort of Soundgarden Badmotorfinger vibe mixed with Nu-metal. We all unironically like Korn as well so maybe they found a way to sneak into our sub-conscious.

6. Do you have any new music in the works?

Yeah we have quite a few tracks in the workshop and we’re in the process of recording material for an EP which we’re hoping to release early this year!

7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?

We have a few shows booked in some local venues around Brisbane. We’re hoping to get out there and tour this year hopefully. Its definitely been hard to get a consistent string of shows with COVID and all. It gives us more time to work on new material though.

8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

Finalizing tracks for our EP, plan for a launch in March/April, Writing and recording new material for a planned album release in early 2023. We hope to be touring within Australia this year and touring the UK and Europe in mid-2023. Our newer stuff is sounding a lot heavier and more progressive than our current repertoire. More in the vein of Soundgarden and Tool.

9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

You can stream our music on Spotify, Apple Music and you can purchase some of our merch from our website: https://tainejoso.com/.

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

I would want them to remember it as if it were a journey. A journey where some sort of new knowledge or feeling was gained. The subtleties of the music mixed with the emotiveness of the lyrics and their delivery. Every song ending being the end of a story. I want the listener to feel like they’ve overcome something.
