FILTHY MELLOW ORCHESTRA have announced the release of their debut single, with shows to follow soon after said release. Much else the band says about themselves and their music creativeness.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members?
The band had quite an interesting and experimental beginning in that we never planned to be the 3-piece band we have become. The band first started writing together in November ’21 at Rhinocorn rehearsal studios in Cambridge. And while at first we thought a 3-piece would sound too thin we quickly discovered that we could create a massive sound. Jake (vocals and guitar) and Lewis (bass) had been playing together in bands on and off for quite a few years but Liam (drums) was definitely a quick and perfect fit into the mix.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
Jake has a weird mind and after we’d been trying to come up with a name for a week or so remembered a name he’d had in his head for years. The name ‘Filthy Mellow Orchestra’ doesn’t mean anything in particular, but it describes the diversity of our music quite well.
3. Where is your band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you’d recommend?
We all come from different areas but are all now based around the Cambridgeshire area and the music scene is amazing! We’re very lucky that we have venues like The Portland Arms and The Junction in the heart of Cambridge and when you move further our there are plenty of small venues to choose from.
A great part of the music scene is that its never hard to find a good local band to go and see. We love to support our fellow bands where we can and we’d definitely recommend you check out Planet Fatale and Akkadian. GREAT HEAVY BANDS!
4. How would you describe your style?
Our style is very connected with the kind of music we like to hear. Not necessarily in genre but in the features of the songs. The music we write has to have these 3 things to get passed by all of us. It has to have a big chorus, catchy hook and a memorable riff whether that be a heavy or more mellow. When you consider the main bands that influence us like Alter Bridge, Motorhead and Don Broco its easy to see why we like what we like.
5. What have you released so far?
We currently don’t have anything released but watch this space as we have just announced our debut single ‘1 A.M.’.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
We are very excited to announce that on Friday May 13th our debut single ‘1 A.M.’ will be released with a subsequent music video and plenty of live shows to go along with it. We can’t wait for everyone to hear the massive sound we captured, we were determined to record the old school way with the music being recorded live and raw. We’d like to say a big thank you to Matty Moon at Half-ton studios who recorded it and Chris Pavey who mastered it.
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
This band prioritizes live shows over every other aspect of the music, we live to play live and we always give 100% out there. Because of this we wouldn’t ever release anything without having either a tour or a lot of shows planned. We will be playing shows all over the southern half of the UK and we have an official tour announcement coming soon. When time allows we’d love to play shows in the Northern half of the UK and Scotland!
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
As plans go we like to keep it simple but big! We will be playing as many shows as its possible for us to play, releasing as much music as we can and focusing on having a big festival season in 2023! We also like to make sure our live show constantly evolves so that you can see us multiple times and still have anew experience.
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
Once ‘1 A.M.’ comes out you will be able to find it anywhere you can buy or stream music (Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Amazon, etc). The music video will of course be on YouTube. In terms of merch we are currently work on some really exciting products and designs that we are looking forward to sharing with you in the future. Also on social media;

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time.
If you listen and enjoy it then you have already paid us the biggest compliment of all. Just enjoy it and make sure to come and see us like…come say hello after the show as well, we’re always us for talking music!
