Progressive modern rock metal band MATTERGY has been around for sometime, releasing their debut album just recently actually. Some newer songs are also in the works as it were, with some shows booked as well. The band talks of all of these matters plus much more below.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Mattergy was formed by Aigars Aress Māls, who played previously with the band Enhet, and Ivars Kalniņš, who was involved in Bruit Monkey and The Mascaron. During the songwriting process, the duo were joined by Andris Buikis, a well-known drummer in the Latvian jazz scene, bassist Ilvars Vītoliņš, and Tobias Sarra, a British avant-garde/folk musician, who performs mainly as a solo artist.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
The band’s name Mattergy relates to the phenomenon of synergy, whilst playing on the interconnectedness of ‘matter’ and ‘energy’. ‘We want to show the inseparability of matter and energy and the eternal interaction from one state to another’.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
The band is based in Riga, Latvia although the lead vocalist is from United Kingdom. The heavy music scene here in Latvia is quite dense, many talented bands but not so many venues to play in. The biggest heavy bands from Latvia are: Skyforger, Sever, Tesa, Eschatos, Māra, Challenger State, Oghre, Preternatural etc.
4. How would you describe your style?
Progressive Metal/Modern Rock. Some people say about us: Progressive Metal and Modern Rock band with surprising, unexpected and harsh guitar passages.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
On April 1st 2022 we released our debut album “Primordial Wrath” which consists of seven songs. ‘Primordial Wrath is our debut, with which we want to give listeners an exciting and musically rich experience. Each song is a story with different dimensions, which gives the listener the opportunity to find the most resonant of them. The survival of different states of the soul permeates all compositions.’
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
We have some new songs which we plan to include in the next album but nothing to show at the moment.
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
Currently we are doing few shows a month locally in Latvia – two gigs planned out for end of May in Liepāja and in Riga.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
We plan to play a concert series presenting our “Primordial Wrath” album starting with local shows but plan to expand internationally. Some festivals are also in the planning stage.

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
Primordial Wrath album is a journey of introduction to Mattergy as a band, a coming together of heavy-hitting, melodically rooted riffs and spiritually inquisitive, socially aware cosmic explorations, in both lyric and sound. The album is a representation of the themes and timbres that Mattergy are exploring thus far.
