Rock band ONE MORE WEEKEND have an album and a few single's under their belts. Newer music is also in the works currently with much else planned as well. See what was all discussed below.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Connor- One More Weekend have been an independent rock band for 5 years now. Before the band I’d written songs but hadn’t really done anything with them. I had this acoustic thing going where I was playing covers and the odd original at a residency in a bar near home. It was extra cash and experience whilst I tried to figure out what I actually wanted to do with my life. My father, who is a musician, pretty much said “why don’t you start a band and do something with those songs?’. I figured why not? so I suggested the idea to my brother Leith who had just started playing bass and he wanted in. We advertised, got Tim (lead guitar) and then Paul (drummer). After a few months of practice our first live show was at a local bar in a country town called Healesville and everything kind of kicked off from there. That first night we played we actually got asked to fill in for another band the next day at a competition, we played the comp and ended up scoring a 2nd place win that gave us a days free recording. The recording turned out pretty average (as it was our first time in any sort of studio environment together) but it cemented our desire to do more on a professional scale. We worked our asses off playing live getting tighter and tighter as a band and 2 years later booked into a local studio called Rangemaster with producer David Carr. Together we recorded our 12 track album ‘We Used To…’. and saw our first bit of success with our single ‘Boxheads’. We have since played over 160 shows, toured the East Coast of Australia and supported acts such as Bec Sandridge and Skies Collide. It was at this point in 2019 that Paul decided music was not for him and left OMW. We had crossed paths with Jayson (drums) in his band many times and had already struck up a friendship. His current band seemed a little all over the place at this point and he was keen to jump into a new project. After the lineup change we had developed new material but our producer David had begun playing live in a band called Claymore (Celtic rock) so it was really hard to find the time to get into Rangemaster and lay down our new stuff. I spoke to my dad who’s old producer just happened to live around the corner literally 5 minutes up the road.
Since then we have developed an awesome relationship with Adrian and Barbara Hannan from The Song Store. With them we have released two singles ‘Talk’ and ‘Colourful Things’ in the midst of Covid 2021 and now our third ‘Raindrops’ in 2022.
We were fortunate enough to play four sold out shows at the Tote during the breaks in lockdowns here in VIC in support of said singles and we are even keener to shred the iconic Cherry in Melbourne yet again in celebration of our 3rd single ‘Raindrops’.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
Connor- I’m influenced by a band called ‘The Academy Is…’ and they have a song called One More Weekend. Whilst I’m not particularly fond of that song, all of us work a day job and I guess we’re just always looking for more time to do the things we love, which of course, we get to do on the weekend. (If my bosses are reading this I really love my job)
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
Connor- We’re based in Melbourne, Australia. The live music scene here is extensive and covers many genres. Some bars and clubs are specific to one genre and others cover various sorts of acts across a single night. We are lovers of original music though and a few of our favourite local bands are Tudor Club, Sledgehammer Honey and Snark. Slightly larger acts that we like that are also based in Melbourne are Ocean Grove and The Getaway Plan.
4. How would you describe your style?
Connor- To make things easy for first time listeners we refer to ourselves as a Rock band. That being said, I believe rock crosses over many genres and we write songs that don’t always fit into a single style.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
Connor- To date we have released one 12 track album and 3 singles. Our debut album ‘We Used To…’ was very pop punk inspired, our first single ‘Talk’ then followed which was a slight introduction to genre blending being a little more rocky. ‘Colourful Things’ was our second single and that was pop all around. Our third and latest single ‘Raindrops’ is bang your head, lose control, melt your face rock and roll baby! With each single we released a seriously next level music video all thanks to the super hardworking Haili Luxa and her talented team at All Events Video Productions. We also release limited Merchandise with each song. It’s hard to answer any question that asks for expectations, like I said previously ‘we write songs that don’t always fit into a single style’ so maybe expect change? Yeah, change is good.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
Connor- Always, we’ve got two more singles up our sleeve this year, ‘Raindrops’ was just the first of 2022.
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
Tim- We all have specific jobs in the band and live touring is my baby. It’s been kinda hard with Covid to arrange anything at all and we were really lucky to fit four sold out shows in when lockdowns were intermittently eased. ‘Raindrops’ was supposed to come out at the end of 2021 as that years third single but a severe lockdown ended those plans and we had no choice but to wait. This year we have eased back into live work but we are booked for Summerwave Festival in November. Hopefully we can jump on the road for our second single, if not we’ll definitely be interstate by the third as our tour bus is dying to be partied in around the rest of the country again!
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Connor- Big plans! Basically we want to pick up the momentum again, do heaps more releases and get the international crowd rowdy. In a few years we’ll have saved and made enough to do a few tours in Europe, the UK and possibly the States.
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
Connor- You can hear, view and purchase all our music and merchandise at our website www.onemoreweekend.com.
The best way to get anything first though is to sign up to the mailing list (you can do that via the website), we give those guys access to new stuff before anyone else gets it.
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
Connor- We want our listeners to have an experience. For those that have seen us live, they know goddamn well that we’re entertainers and when you’re face to face with us it’s easy to be involved. But without the performance there is only the song. You might cry, you might wanna dance or lose control, sing or laugh, regardless of what you feel the only thing that matters to us is that you become A PART of this whole journey. Remember YOUR experience with our music. This ride’s only going to get better and it would suck if you missed it.
