The 3148s Says Much on Themselves, Music, Shows and More!

Alternative rockers THE 3148s has been active for a while, releasing not one but two EP's, with new music already being written! The band has given some time to play some shows as of late. See what else the band had to say about themselves, their music, and more below.

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

We are a group of litigation attorneys who started out chatting over drinks after depositions that quickly found common ground though our love of music.  Ian Coote (Vocals, Guitar, Keys, and whatever other instrument he can get his hands on), Greg Jones (Vocals and Guitar) and Jeff Smythe (Vocal and Guitar) started off this venture as a cover band and quickly recruited Jason Seifert (bass) and Tom Jones (drums, and the only one smart enough not to be an attorney) to round out the band.  Beginning in a garage in Detroit, Michigan as a project to play at local attorney events, quickly morphed into our own sound and we moved from covers to a catalogue of originals.  Unfortunately, during the pandemic, Jeff left the band, but the remaining 4 of us have pressed on.  During the quarantine, we released a series of “socially distant covers”, an ambitious project where we covered some of our favorite tunes while never actually being in the same room (or city) as each other.   This led to a bout of inspiration where we started really focusing on our own music, and have continued writing more of our own songs ever since.

What started out as a bunch of lawyers covering some cool tunes at law-related events has turned into regular gigs, both headlining and supporting national touring acts, all over Michigan.

2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?

It’s an inside lawyer joke.  The 3148s (pronounced “Thirty-One, Forty-Eights) is a reference to a section of the Michigan No Fault code, that awards attorney fees for services claim that are “so excessive at to have no reasonable foundation”… which seemed to sum up our early existence as a band to a tee.

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

Our home base is Detroit, Michigan.  You would be hard pressed to find another city that has a more diverse and storied musical history.  Although the pandemic had a dramatic effect on the venues that host live music, live music never quit here.  Detroit is known for its Rock, but also has a vibrant techno and hip hop scene.  A local band you should probably check out is  Elsbeth Trembly and the Treatment.  We have played with them a few times and they have a great vibe.

4. How would you describe your style?

Our sound has been described as “Americana run through an alt rock meat grinder”.  Ian will bring these awesome Americana/Folk melodies to practice, Greg will jam on them and add a blues/classic rock framework, Jason will add a punk rock/new wave groove and then Tom will make sense of the madness and fill out the backbone of the song.  We all come from very diverse musical influences, which we have blended together to make a sound that is very much our own.

5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?

We have released two EP’s, “Domestic Bliss” and “Sanctuary”, independently and then two more singles “Beck and Call” and “Picture of You” once we started working with The Animal Farm Music.

In looking at our early works (Domestic Bliss in particular), you can expect raw energy and pounding blues riffs.  As we moved forward in both our writing individually and as a band, Greg started contributing more to the writing duties and our sound filled out more of the classic 90s alt rock sound that it is today.

6. Do you have any new music in the works?

Yes!  We are always writing music.  Once the creative faucet was turned on about 2 years ago, it’s hard to stop us from writing.  We have two more singles that have been mixed and mastered by The Animal Farm Music (“Guillotine” and “Saratoga Ave”) that will be available this summer and fall, and then we have designs on heading back into the studio in August/September to lay down a few more.

7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?

Since the live music scene officially re-opened here in 2022, we have been playing fairly regularly all over Michigan.  We have a series of shows around Detroit planned for the summer, including Headlining a Festival in August that will benefit ALS Research.  A cause we are very passionate about.  You can find out more information on that festival at www.lawlapalooza.org.

8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

Our plan remains to continue to write music that is as fun to play as it is to listen to.  We will continue to play local shows but also plan on branching out for shows and festivals all over the Midwest.

9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

You can find us on all of the major streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music) but also check out your official YouTube page for our videos and live performances.  Also check us out at www.3148s.com.

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

The biggest thing we would like a listener to remember is that “wow, these guys really love playing together”.  We write songs that we want stuck in your head as you are walking around town the next day.
