Dan Riley Discusses Music, Shows, and More!

Alternative rocker DAN RILEY has released a few single's, with a whole lot of newer music in the works! But that is not all, this guy even has a residency right now where show's have been taking place! A lot more is in the works as well, find out what else is discussed below!

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

I’m a solo act. My musical history is very long and winding, as many are. I’ve played music in some capacity or another since I was about 6 years old. I spent about 15 years pursuing a career as a professional skier throughout that time, but music was always there. As I was gaining traction in my skiing career, I destroyed my knees and had to turn to something else to help me get through the day. When that happened, I realized that playing and writing music had always been the most important release that I’d had, even when pursuing another career, and decided to take the plunge into making music full-time as a result.

2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?

There is none.

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

I’m currently based out of Washington, DC. The scene here is really interesting. I moved here in August of 2021, which was a very strange time to be navigating any music scene in general. It’s been really interesting, though, to be joining the scene here as it’s rebooting itself following the tumultuous last couple of years that we’ve had. It’s a scene that’s very much looking to reinvent itself and it’s been amazing to be a part of that. Traditionally, DC has been a huge epicenter for Punk Rock, Go-Go Music, Jazz and Blues. All of those things contribute to a pretty spectacular tapestry when it comes to live music here. I think that what I bring has elements of some of those genres but is also completely different. There isn’t a huge singer-songwriter scene here. But that scene is growing and I really couldn’t have asked for a better time to be a part of it because I think the city is ready for it.

4. How would you describe your style?

Somewhere in the confluence of straight-up Alternative Rock and lyric-based Americana. The artists that I listen to on a regular basis range from Sturgill Simpson, Trampled by Turtles Alt Country/ Rock/ Americana to Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar and The Wu-Tang Clan, all mixed with a little bit of Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Strokes-style alternative rock. I just try to channel the parts of all of those genres and sub-genres that give me the feeling of being lost in what I’m listening to.

5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?

So far, I’ve released 3 singles. They’re all different kinds of alternative rock, but are also very lyric-based. You can expect big bridges, catchy choruses, and idiosyncratic lyrics. At the end of the day, I’m just trying to convey the way that I see the world in a way that makes other people see the world in a way that makes sense for them. I think that in some way or another, all of my songs convey that.

6. Do you have any new music in the works?

I have a lot of new music in the works. Several more singles will be released over the course of the next few months and I’m hoping to release a full-length album by the end of next year. As far as the immediate future, keep an eye out for the next single. It’s going to be a good one.

7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?

I currently have a weekly residency at Astro Beer Hall in Washington, DC. That’s been a pretty incredible way to leave my mark on the scene here. Additionally, I play shows at a lot of other places around town and around the region and am hoping to be able to expand to some larger tours soon. You can find more info and updates about all of that at my website danriley-music.com and my social media @dan.riley_ . There’s always something going on.

8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

I’ll continue to write and release music and play shows to everyone that wants to listen. Looking forward to the releases coming up soon and to the journey that comes along with all of it. More than anything, I’m excited to continue to build my fanbase and play my music to  people that want to hear it. There’s nothing more rewarding.

9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

Anywhere that you listen to music? Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, Amazon, Tidal, Deezer, etc. If you want any more info on my shows, distribution, contact info, etc. you can find it at my website danriley-music.com

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

I would like for the listener to remember the moment that they heard my music for the first time. I’d like for them to associate the sounds of my songs with a memory, moment, or period of time in their lives. Above all, I’d like for the listener to remember where they were when they listened to my songs.
