Electronic industrial act GINGER MAY has been around for a while, releasing a recent single titled "Me and You", with a few more song's being worked upon currently with much more in-store! See what else the band discusses all below.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
The first form of Ginger May appeared in 2012 in Moscow. Two independent musicians with similar musical tastes, Tanya Schneider and Marlene Vox, gathered to create songs. However, due to the relocation of one of the band members, the project began a new life in Tokyo, Japan.
Ginger May today is the collaboration of four passionate musicians who came together because of the need to write and perform original music in different genres.
Ginger May differs fundamentally from many Japanese bands, not only because of the multi-nationality of the band's members and original sound, but also the unusual combination of the dark visual image and lyrics. You can feel the influence of industrial and alternative rock in the band’s sound. The main feature of the band's sound is the mix of heavy guitar, electronic and catchy melodies.
Despite the "dark image " there really is no genre classification that fits Ginger May. The songwriters Tanya Schneider and Satoshi Higashida strive to ensure that their original melodies create the musical basis for their convincing lyrics. For the band, it’s all about the song.
GINGER MAY has released two albums, one acoustic, to much fanfare from fans of dark music, as well as alternative music fans. 2022 is a big year for Ginger May as the band starts collaborating with indie label Messina Record. And the result of their collaboration is a new stellar single “Me and You” which we will talk about below.
Ginger May are:
Tanya Schneider - vocals
Satoshi Higashida - guitars, programming, vocal
Toshi Kuwahara - bass
Joey Vetter- drums
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
We don't really like discussing the name of the band. We want to provide an opportunity for our listeners to dream up this topic. For some, it will sound like a girl's name, for others like a girl with red hair. And if you are a deep diver into the old English language, you can find several more interpretations of this name. And all this will be partly true.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
The group is currently based in Tokyo. As you know, Japan is very diverse and musically developed. To be honest, it is very difficult to describe the local scene in a small paragraph. It all depends on what you are looking for. There are many visual kei bands in Japan. We also have many foreigners on the underground stage. In any case, it is very difficult to select a few bands. This topic deserves a separate long article.
4. How would you describe your style?
Described as an electronic-industrial act, the band has incorporated funk, alternative rock, and hip-hop into their sound. With the dark, melodic vocals of Tanya and the heavy, bouncing riffs of guitarist Satoshi, GINGER MAY is a unique mixture of both the dark and light; a mix of genres made just right.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
“Me and You”, the new single from Tokyo rock band GINGER MAY. The dark and layered sound of their past releases now is melded with a new sound that will make old fans happy and interest new ones as well.
Their first release on Messina Records, GINGER MAY looks to a new start while continuing their success in the Tokyo music scene as one of the scenes premier rock bands.
“Me and You” is a sexy, sweet groove-laden single with a rhythm to get you moving that sparkles with an intensity of rock and roll swagger.
In addition Ginger May is going to release “Me and You” Oficial Music Video on July 17th.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
We have a few more songs to work on. We believe that soon we can surprise you with a new single. O course, no spoilers now, since we have not the only song, and which one is going to be next released we are not sure yet.
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
Recently we have had a single drop-off party. And it was a blast. Since we are working hard on our second single of this year we can attend only domestic events in Japan. Summer is basically a hot vacation time, so we are planning to be back on the domestic stage in the autumn.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Oh, that's a big question. We can’t foresee far but what we really would want to do is continue to make music as long as we can.
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
Here is quick access to our latest single “Me and You”. We believe you can find all the links you need there.

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
We believe that people can relate to our music. Because all of our songs are reactions to events that occur in our or friends' lives. It is very sincere. We never write about something that we haven't experienced. And if listeners can connect to our songs, that would mean they also experienced the same or similar feelings. And what’s more, we hope our music can help them to cope with all the bad stuff in their lives.
