Elemental rockers THE LILAC HOUR have been around for a while, debuting with their EP and single coming up soon. They will even be playing some shows later this summer time with a lot more in the works too. The band talks of the matters below.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
The Lilac Hour is a London-based Alt Rock band, consisting of lead singer and guitarist, Jake McCollum, Matt Volpato on drums and Jamie Katz on bass. Jake and Jamie met at uni and played in cover bands together before deciding to start writing original music during lockdown. The Lilac Hour is the reincarnation of their previous band, “Emergency”. Having welcomed drummer Matt into the band and taken huge strides in our production and songwriting, we decided a change was required. We are releasing an EP in 2022, for which we have written a lot of music which we believe represents a big step up on our currently available catalogue.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
We spent months arguing about what to call it. We oscillated between rhymes, double entendres and dramatic metaphors before settling on The Lilac Hour…which is totally random, made up and meaningless.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We are based in London and have played with several different bands over the last few months at some varied and amazing venues, including 93 Feet East, The Victoria in Dalston and The Engine Rooms in Mile End. Our two favorites are Oliver Beardmore (if you're into your shoegaze) and Asleep People (if you're more of an indie rocker).
4. How would you describe your style?
We are influenced by many different types of music. We love heavy rock bands like Nothing But Thieves and Muse, but are also into softer, more melody driven artists like Sam Fender. We draw on rock elements like heavy guitars and riffs but also the kind of melodies you’d more often find in pop music. Have a look at our Spotify radio to see what we mean:

5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
With our previous band “Emergency”, we released 4 tracks during 2021, which we have now listed as a sort of demos EP on The Lilac Hour streaming profiles. We’re very proud of these releases and they were pivotal in our musical development, but they were very much a precursor to our new material. If you’re interested in hearing them, have a look:

6. Do you have any new music in the works?
This year, we will release our debut EP. The first single, “Call Me”, is out Friday 22nd July. It’s a sort of soft rock ballad with a strong tune, but the guitar solo in the middle is the highlight. Pre save using the link! https://linktr.ee/thelilachour.
We already have one other track recorded and ready to go and will be heading into the studio very soon to complete the others. This EP marks a significant departure from our previous works in terms of style and quality and we’re really looking forward to its release.
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We have plans to play several gigs this summer, starting with a show at The Waiting Room in Stoke Newington on the day “Call Me” releases. Follow our Instagram to stay tuned for more dates: https://www.instagram.com/the_lilac_hour/.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
We’ve got lots of songs ready to record and we want to be playing live as much as we can. We’d love to work our way up to playing with better known bands and find a new audience this way.
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
Our music is available on all major streaming platforms (https://linktr.ee/thelilachour). We’ve focused more on the music than merch recently, but we’ll get some made very soon.
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
We’re only getting $0.006 per stream, so give it a couple more spins.
