Mellow rockers MARPLES have their debut EP out there with no plans at the current time of releasing any newer material but hopefully soon! The band discusses about themselves, the music they make and plans ahead.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Marples formed on 9th August 2021 with members Joseph Neville (Lead Vocal and rhythm guitarist), Thomas Martin (Lead guitarist) and Joseph Kneale (Bass guitarist). We just needed a drummer and soon brought in Jaidyn MacDonald on the drums. We progressed from playing covers to writing our own songs and going on to play live at open mics. We then moved forward to playing our own gigs and to support other bands at their gigs in different venues across our city. We had a change in drummer as Jaidyn MacDonald decided to leave the band as he realized it wasn’t his thing so we looked for a new drummer and we were very impressed when we invited Luke Fieldsend to practice with us. He picked up our songs nearly straight away and it seemed like a perfect fit so we invited Luke to join the band and he was delighted to join.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
The name ‘Marples’ has significance to our city as it was an old pub/venue that got bombed during World War Two. We thought this would be a great name as it represents the city we are from.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We are based out of Sheffield in South Yorkshire of the United Kingdom. The music scene round here is pretty mixed to be honest. There’s a big ‘new indie’ scene rising in the city which we categorize ourselves in. There’s also some great other bands that we know such as Lunarca (@lunarcaband), Juno (@juno_official_) and The Levitation (@levitation.band). They are all different styles. For example, Lunarca I would say have a 60's vibe about them. I can see their links to bands such as The Who and The Beatles in their music. Juno and The Levitation are great 3 piece bands from our local area who you must check out too!
4. How would you describe your style?
Our style is very unique. All our different members have their different influences. Nev (Joseph Neville) is influenced a lot by The Beatles and Blossoms, Tom (Thomas Martin)is influenced a lot by Queen and The Smiths and then Luke and Kneale (Joseph Kneale) a lot by the Arctic Monkeys who are a local band to us obviously being from Sheffield. Our music is very guitar driven and we have very mellow tunes with a catchy vibe to it. No song is the same as we have fast songs that have you tapping your foot to and we have slower songs that are nice on the ear that can really catch your attention.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
Earlier this year, we released our debut EP called ‘In The Attic’. It consists of the first four tracks we wrote together. I would expect someone to see from our works our original sound which sparks from the different influences we all have combining and the hard work we put into writing our music. 6. Do you have any new music in the works?
We aren’t currently recording and haven’t got anything coming out. However, we plan to in the very near future so keep your eyes peeled!
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We have a show on Wednesday 21st September at the White Bear in Barnsley that we’re playing which is yet to be announced. However, we’ve got two announced shows coming up. We are supporting Welsh band, Holy Coves, on their UK tour at Record Junkee in Sheffield on Saturday 1st October. We are also supporting Matilda Shakes at Sidney & Matilda in Sheffield on Friday 18th November with a fantastic support line up. 8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
As a band, we look to play bigger shows to more people across the UK and hopefully branch out playing different sort of gigs across the country to new audiences. We hope to release new and successful music and for us to hopefully play some summer festivals in the future! Glastonbury, we’re on our way…👀. We’ve had our music played on a few radio stations, but we’d love to get on the radio more to build our exposure!
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
You can listen to our band on Spotify or Apple Music. You can also listen to us on our YouTube channel as we sometimes post our original songs on there. As for buying our stuff, we don’t have a site, but we do sell t shirts and bags in person. Just come along to one of our gigs and you can buy one there!

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
We’d like whoever listens to our music to enjoy and keep the songs in their heads afterwards as we believe our songs are catchy. From Tom’s sequel riffs to Kneale’s catchy bass lines to Luke’s superior drumming to Nev’s slick vocals and lyrics, we hope you’d see how much we put into our music and hopefully we see you very soon.
