Pop hardcore emo punks HARPOON, THE WHALE have had their third album released, with an all new special in time for the holidays! The band says a lot about their upcoming plans, music, and much more all below.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Harpoon, the Whale is the brainchild of me (Kaleb Richey) with a list of rotating members mostly including old friends and college classmates. Right now the line-up consists of 5 members:
Kaleb Richey - Vocals and Guitar
Sean Francis - Guitar and Vocals
Eric Stallard - Guitar
Rob Joyce - Bass
Thomas Saffel - Drums
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
Unfortunately, the band name doesn't have much of a story, it's just the name of a fictional whale. I (Kaleb Richey) love nautical themes and have always been enthralled with ocean life. I get that question quite often, maybe I should just make up a story and run with it!
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We're from Laramie, Wyoming, which is about a two hour drive north from Denver, Colorado. Our music scene has quite a bit of country influence, but we share a home-town with punk rockers Teenage Bottlerocket. Our scene feels like it's state wide, since we have so little music in our town, but a few other Wyoming bands I'd recommend are Figures in Fiction out of Casper, Wyoming, and Sorry No Sympathy out of Laramie, Wyoming.
4. How would you describe your style?
Our style is very influenced by the 90s and early 2000s. We really like the term “dreamo” to define what we're going for and have been described as pop-punk, post-hardcore, and emo in the past.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
We've just released our 3rd full length album this last October, which was tracked at The Blasting Room in Fort Collins, Colorado. They're known for bands such as The Descendents, ALL, Rise Against, and Alkaline Trio, which were all bands we really love.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
We're currently working on a Christmas Special for December 2022. This is becoming quite the project since we started in the middle November and have 3 week deadline. We should be wrapping up all the video shoots and recording the first weekend of December leaving only a few days for post production work. We're excited about how this project is turning out and we're involving as many of our Wyoming friends as we could!
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We just finished a Wyoming/Colorado run in October. We're hoping to do another short run with our friends in Blissful Little Me out of Cheyenne, Wyoming this coming January or February.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
We're hoping to keep pushing our latest album and hop on a few festivals throughout the year. We also love filming and recording live videos, so expect a few more of those in 2023!
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
I (Kaleb Richey) really hope some of the lyrical content stands out to someone experiencing stress or anxiety, as most songs are about my personal struggle with anxiety and overcoming the challenges associated with anxiety. Also, there's a pretty cool guitar solo on the song ATS, I hope people don't miss it! Thank you so much! If there's anything we can add, please let me know. -Kaleb Richey
