Melodic punk rockers FAKE NEWS have released an album, EP, and a single off their next upcoming EP release out soon. The band discusses says there is plenty more to come, more single's the EP and much more in-store.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
The band first formed in late 2017 when Mick put out the word he was looking to start a punk rock band. None of us had ever really met before & I heard about it through a friend of a friend but our first practice just clicked. We were punching out new songs every week & pretty soon we were playing shows & recording music. We scored a bunch of international support slots with the likes of Good Riddance, Darko, Death By Stereo, Straightline & Guttermouth. After that the band went through a few line up changes with a few new drummers & singer. Then in late 2020 we enlisted our current vocalist Tim Russ to lay down vocals for our full length album Everyday Warrior. We added Nat MacDonald on drums around the same time & that is how the band looks today.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
At our first band practice in 2017 we had the discussion of what are we going to call ourselves. Someone came out with Fake News as it was emerging at the time as a bit of a buzzword. We all had a laugh and went home. After that it seemed to stick & we just ran with it & here we are today.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We started out as a Gold Coast band but our singer & drummer are both from the Sunshine Coast which is over 100Kms away so we opt to call ourselves a south east Queensland band now. The music scene is not real great here at the moment especially the punk scene. There just aren’t enough good bands or fans to support the scene & help it thrive. I will give a mention to our good mates Friends With The Enemy who are also from the Gold Coast & probably the best local punk band round these parts. Definitely worth a listen.
4. How would you describe your style?
Melodic punk rock. Think 90’s Epitaph/FAT Wreck Chords style with a modern twist on it.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
We released a full length album Everyday Warrior in 2021.
An acoustic EP in 2022.
We have just released our first single Nothing Town from our upcoming EP Take Me Away
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
Oh yeah there is plenty more to come. We have our second single Rise & Fall coming out mid February with a video clip. Then the Take Me Away EP comes out in March. We also have a bunch of new songs in the pipeline that we are looking to record shortly & hopefully release later this year
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
As it happens we are doing a 3 show leg here in Queensland with Everclear starting tonight.
We are also playing with A Wilhelm Scream in March here on the Gold Coast.
There are a couple of other shows scattered in there & we are aiming to do an EP launch show.
We are all definitely keen to hit the road for a tour down to Sydney & Melbourne. Nothing firm planned as yet but likely to happen later this year
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
World domination! But seriously we are all enjoying getting together & making music & so long as there are others out there that feel the same we will continue to do it.
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
We are on all streaming platforms – Spotify, Apple, Bandcamp, YouTube & the countless others. So far we have been handling all our own merch sales ourselves so if you are looking for something drop us a line & we will send it out to you. We have been shipping shirts, CD’s & skate decks all over the world already which we were blown away with. We do need to setup our online sales though so it is a bit easier for people to buy it
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
That’s a tough one. Music is different for everyone but I guess it would have to be the way it makes you feel. Whether it’s the lyrics that get you or just the drums beats & guitar riffs. If it makes you feel better than you did before you played the song then that’s a win for me.
