Greek death, thrash metal band CULT OF ORPIST have unleashed what is their debut EP! In fact, the band has gone on to discuss this EP release, in great detail on its formation, the songs, lyrics, and where all of this will be leading to next up fo them.
1. You guys just released your debut EP, how does it feel to have a debut out and about for all to hear?
The feeling of having your music released and getting the world to hear it is awesome! Same applies for all the positive feedback we received concerning our debut EP. It surely keeps us pumped and motivated as hell!
2. When did you start writing for this recent EP?
Most of the tracks preexisted, as the vast majority of them were written by Chris [Rhythm Guitars] way before Cult of Orpist. When the band started taking its form, the tracks were revisited, new ideas were added and they slowly started taking their way to the studio.
3. Did you feel any pressure upon its release?
No pressure or whatsoever, except of course the one we put upon ourselves in order to achieve our musical goals as perfect and professional as they could get.
4. How would you describe the overall sound of the new EP?
We tried to keep this old-school feeling in our sound without all this “shininess & brightness. However, this was achieved effortlessly and we believe that this release pays full tribute to the 90s metal sound.
5. Can you go into one or two tracks on the new EP? If so, can you give us the track title and brief description of how the track sounds and how it came about?
Let’s talk about “Wasted Scum”, the opening track of the EP which also happens to be our first official video clip.
Lyrically, it tells the story of a man casted away by society who thinks of him as a pariah, a lost-cause and dead-weight just because he enjoys listening to heavy metal and getting wasted. However, the man leads a perfect normal life, getting along by himself just fine. So, the track tells his story from these two different points of view.
Musically, it’s a fast-paced track with a lot of crossover influences and a nasty break-down too. We believe that it represents the band’s more “fun” attitude.
6. While this EP is out currently, does the band have any new music in the works, perhaps an LP?
Yes for sure! New music already exists and more is created each and every day. We plan on going for a full length album, but more details about that in due course.
7. What has influenced your sound and style?
As we already stated, musically we draw influence mainly from the 90s metal scene and more specifically from bands like Slayer, Entombed, Obituary, Kreator, etc. but also from newer groups such as Toxic Holocaust and Power Trip.
8. How would you say you differ from other bands and artists on the scene?
It is really difficult to “re-invent the wheel” and be unique in a genre which counts more than 4 decades of life. So, our main aim is to be 100% pleased with the music we create, keep an open mind for various influences while staying true to our musical identity.
9. What do you want to achieve as a band?
It’s simple. Express ourselves throughout our music, getting it heard to as many people as possible and having fun performing it on stage.
10. What does next year hold for Cult of Orpist?
We intend to play as many live gigs as possible, so more and more people can get to know our Cult. That is for now our primary goal. Also, as we stated above, a full length album is in the works.
