So Long, Space Girl's Anina Discusses New Album and Further Plans!

Pop punks SO LONG, SPACE GIRL were formed back in 2019. Over time they would come to form a line-up and play some shows here and there. Thus, this would lead them to release their debut album, that would lead to a follow-up album release, with a whole lot more in-store for them! One of the band members discusses this new album and further plans ahead.

1. What type of band are you?

Anina Barrett (drums) -This is a point of contention even within the band. Oh, the discussions we have about it (laughs).

I think it's generally settled on that we fall into the pop punk genre, maybe straying into alt rock.

2. Can you tell us a brief history of your band?

AB - We started back in 2019. Paul and I had been inactive for a couple of year. We put out an advert on a local music site and found AJ, and learned he was a bloody genius songwriter.

3. Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

AB - For me, I would say Emily Haines from Metric, and Miki Berenyi from Lush. Two great bands.

On a more personal level, I come from a very musical family. My mum and my grandad were always really supportive of my music, even when I was four years old banging away on pots and pans, they recognized that I had the bug.

4. Who writes the songs, what are they about?

AB - AJ is the primary songwriter, I don't think there is any one subject matter he tends to write about, but they are absolutely songs from the perspective of the self. For example, ‘Your Heroes Are All Dead’ is about how humanity is screwing itself over and how badly it affects the world around us. The detriment of selfish action.

5. How does the upcoming album vary from past work?

AB - It was generally agreed that while “Stranded” was a great album, this one had to have a heavier more impactful sound while also still having that energy which was present on “Stranded”. It's not healthy for any band to stagnate into formula so tightly that each album sounds the same, music is supposed to be dynamic and keep building.

6. Has anything happened since “Stranded” that you feel will influence the mood or lyrical content on the album?

AB - To be honest a lot of these songs have been in existence for a very long time, AJ has been building up songs by the book full for years now but hasn't had the right band to get them out with, so I think the influence for them has already been, rather than them being in the moment.

7. How did you assemble the band and the team who worked on the album?

AB - It just had to be John Mitchell to record us, he did such a great job with “Stranded”, and in that time we built such a good rapport with him, so it was literally just us, him, and lots of coffee. Not exactly a thrilling story of creating a masterpiece. I wish it were more exciting! (laughs)

8. Did the band have any definitive goals they were shooting for before the recording process began for this album?

AB - Well we actually began work on “Your Heroes Are All Dead” eight months after the completion of “Stranded”, I think it was more a case of unfinished business. We were in that space of still having all these great songs that didn't get chosen, so we need to get another album out, so they get their time to shine too.

9. You’ve always got something new going on, what can we expect in 2023?

AB- Gigs and lots of them. We also need to continue putting out the tracks from this album. I think recording is off the table at least for the next year or two though.

10. If you had to pick one song off either album old or new to show someone to introduce them to your music, which would you pick?

AB - This is a hard question. I would have to say ‘Spineless’, as it pretty much showcases our range and I believe it sits almost central between everything else we do.
