Progressive rock metal titans OCEAN DISTRICTS have a few releases under their belts, including a recent new album, promotion and show playing is all that matters. The band's bassist Tanel discusses these matters at hand below.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Ocean Districts is an instrumental band from Tallinn, Estonia. The band was founded in 2011 by guitarist Martin Lepalaan. What was first meant just as a side-project, but after the release of our first album called "Expeditions" in 2014, which received critical acclaim and helped establish our name in the Estonian music scene, Ocean Districts was no side project no more. Band members are long-time friends with heavier music background.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
We felt it to be a fitting name to express our musical soundscape.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We are from the shores of Baltic Sea, Tallinn, Estonia. Our music scene is small but strong. Bands worth checking out are Kaschalot and Kannabinõid for example.
4. How would you describe your style?
Our style is dynamic and cinematic, sound that blends elements of post-rock, post-metal, post-hardcore, ambient, progressive and alternative rock. It's impossible to describe our style with one word.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
2014 we released our debut album "Expeditions", 2018 came out EP "Doomtowns" And 8 of May this year came out our latest LP "Phantom Islands" on double vinyl. We are always trying something new and something different but one can always expect Ocean Districts signature high quality sound and feel.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
As we just released our new album, then we are focusing this year on promoting it and playing shows. We are not in songwriting mode at the moment.
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We will have our album presentation shows in Tartu(19.05) and in Tallinn(03.06) We will play Hard Rock Lager in Estonia and Devilstone festival in Lithuania. And we will go to play some more Baltic shows in autumn.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Write new music, discover new territories.
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
We are on all streaming platforms and one can buy our merch and music from oceandistricts.com.
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
Remember the feeling of being on this adventurous sonic journey. Our music is not easy listening or background music so it requires a bit more focus and we recommend the listener to immerse him or herself in our music. Hopefully it creates emotions and provokes thoughts.
