Post-rock metal act SOLNEDGANG has a new dingle out, with a whole lot more music in the works, with another single on the way! No shows or tours in the works currently, but new music is expected for sure and we will see where it goes from there. Find out all about this below.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Solnedgang is a one-man band and I (Jon) mainly play guitar, with some keyboards, drum programming and occasional samples. I’m originally from Norway, but I’ve been based in the UK since 2009. After creating music just for fun for years, and then gradually playing less and less, I recently bought some new gear (including the first of several new guitars) and picked it back up in October last year. Things have really kicked on from then!
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
The name 'Solnedgang' means 'sunset' in Norwegian, and because sunsets symbolise endings but are also beautiful, I find it quite fitting as this melancholic juxtaposition of darkness and light is something I try to create in my music.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
I’m based in London, so there are too many great bands to name really. The scene is almost too big, but since the music I play (instrumental post-rock/metal) is quite niche there seems to be a lot of support between artists of that and similar genres. In terms of UK bands doing something vaguely similar to myself I want to mention Mountainscape and Din of Celestial Birds as two fantastic new-ish bands. I’ll give a shout-out to my good friend Tim from Green Queen as well – they’re great, you should check them out!
4. How would you describe your style?
Instrumental guitar-based music in the post-rock/metal realm. I’m influenced by all kinds of music, but bands like Mono, Pelican, Explosions in the Sky – and even Pink Floyd and The Cure – are probably the ones that are the easiest to identify in my music.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
I’ve just released a new single called ‘Nornir’, inspired by creatures from Norse mythology. Expect immersive, atmospheric instrumental music with (hopefully) beautiful melodies.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
Loads! I’m planning another single in the next couple of months and then the debut album should, all going well, come out later in the year. I’m constantly writing and recording new material, so there should be a fairly steady flow of new stuff coming.
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
It’s very much a studio project (at least for now), so no plans to play any shows.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Get the debut album out and see if people like it, and then take it from there.
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
‘Nornir’ is out on all streaming platforms, but solnedgang.bandcamp.com is the best place really, as you can download the music (pay what you want) and any new music is likely to be released there first, as well as some demos. I’m hoping to have some merch soon as well. Links to that will be on solnedgang.co.uk.
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
Hopefully the melodies! Other than that I try to create immersive, atmospheric music and since there are no vocals it’s easy for the listener to create their own meaning, though I give little hints to what inspired me in the song titles. I work as a graphic designer (you can see a small selection of my work on www.jagdesign.no) and in my mind the music and visuals are very much linked, and part of the world I’m trying to build – if that makes sense. I’m also planning some animations to go along with the music – stay tuned!
