Hard rock heavy hitters SLOW GREEN THING have their debut EP, and are always grinding out new gears, expected out soon! The band talks about creating music, formation, and what the future holds!
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Back in 2013, Sven, refusing to let the music die with his previous band 'Burning Motors', set out to create what would become the heavy, doom-laden juggernaut known as SLOW GREEN THING. It wasn't just about finding musicians; it was about finding brothers in arms with the right mix of passion and groove. Over the years, we've seen some warriors come and go, each leaving their mark on our sound. Kay originally brought the bass thunder until life’s tides brought Conny to us, who then passed the torch to Martin, a bassist with a knack for quick learning and slick playing. The lead guitar saw Andreas conjure solos before Dave stepped in, weaving his own magic into our fabric. On drums, Jörg, with his beats from the depths, has been the backbone alongside Sven's haunting vocals. It's been a saga of change, growth, and relentless rock. Each former member, from Kay's rhythmic pulse to Andreas' melodic solos, has been a chapter in our story, contributing to the evolution of our sound. Now, with Martin, Dave, and Jörg, Sven is pushing the boundaries of Stoner and Doom Metal, honoring the past while blasting into the future.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
The saga of our name is as epic as one of our riffs. Initially flirting with the name 'Ooze', inspired by the green slime that gave the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles their power, we were all about that transformative, potent vibe. But, as it turns out, we weren’t the only ones captivated by the ooze’s allure—it seems like it was a popular choice among bands globally. During a fateful night, immersed in the heavy, transcendental sounds of Elder at the legendary Chemiefabrik Dresden, our quest for a unique identity took a turn. Amidst the sonic euphoria and green-tinted discussions, Kay, our then bass player, tossed out a phrase in a moment of inspiration (or perhaps frustration): 'Let’s just call it something slow and green, man.' That offhand, slightly defeated suggestion, spoken in our native tongue and amidst the camaraderie of music lovers, struck a chord. It was a lightbulb moment, blending our desire for something unique with the essence of our music and the green, oozy inspiration we initially loved. Thus, from the depths of a Dresden gig night, amidst riffs and revelations, SLOW GREEN THING was born—a nod to our initial 'ooze' inspiration, transformed into a name that perfectly encapsulates our sound: heavy, enveloping, and unmistakably alive.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
Hailing from Dresden, we're part of a kick-ass Stoner/Doom scene that's as cosy as it is vibrant. The local scene's bursting with talent – check out our buddies Dead Myrick, old heroes Gorilla Monsoon, crazy guys from Lasse Reinstroem, fresh Highlord Witchhammer, but also Heliod, Doublewide, Gavial, Space Raptor for starters. You see, we got a lot of great bands. Dresden's a hotbed for heavy, with a community that supports, thrives, and jams together.
4. How would you describe your style?
We're all about that heavy, '70s hard rock vibe with a modern twist. Stoner Rock and Doom Metal are our bread and butter, but we toss in psychedelic vocals and jam sessions for that unique SLOW GREEN THING flavour. Expect a sonic journey that's heavy, groovy, and downright otherworldly.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
From our debut EP 'I' to the latest record 'Wetterwarte/Waltherstrasse', we've been busy crafting tunes that resonate with the soul of heavy metal. Four albums and an EP later, our discography is a testament to our evolution and dedication to the scene. Dive in, and you'll find a mix of raw, experimental, and melodic metal that's unmistakably ours.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
Always! We've got the gears grinding on new material that continues to push our boundaries. With a recent album drop and fresh tracks already in the works, the creative juices are flowing. Stay tuned for more riff-heavy, soul-stirring metal magic.
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
While the pandemic put a damper on live gigs, we're itching to hit the stage again. With a few shows lined up in eastern Germany, we're on the prowl for festivals and venues to spread the SLOW GREEN THING gospel. Keep an eye out; We are also always searching for opportunities to play at club gigs and festivals - so if you are a booker, don't hesitate to contact us.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
More music, more shows, and more moments shared with our fans. We're set on expanding our sonic footprint, exploring new territories in our sound, and bringing our music to as many ears as possible. The journey's far from over, and we're just heating up.
