Theatrical emo rock group THE FUNERAL PORTRAIT deliver massive riffs and a driving chorus while evoking a sense of fear on their new track “Suffocate City” featuring guest vocals from Spencer Charnas of horror-themed active rock outfit Ice Nine Kills. Out digitally today, June 21, “Suffocate City” is the second sample of new music from THE FUNERAL PORTRAIT’s upcoming new album due via Better Noise Music later this year. SPENCER CHARNAS comments “Thrilled to team up with our good friends The Funeral Portrait on their track ‘Suffocate City.’ We had a killer time working with them on the song and the accompanying music video. Check it out now.”

Narrating the tale of a relentless stalker the new Beyond Unbroken song "Monster" draws inspiration from the TV show YOU. Blending menacing guitar riffs with hauntingly powerful vocals, "Monster"  features a compelling mix of sharp, aggressive melodies and eerie industrial soundscapes. This potent sonic blend not only captures the essence of a hunter on the prowl but pushes a thrilling soundscape. Inducing a spine-chilling sensation, making one question their solitude in moments they thought they were alone the song encapsulates the eerie essence of covert surveillance. Striving for a departure from their usual style, Beyond Unbroken aimed to craft a track that ignites movement and captivates audiences.

The evolution of "Monster" involved experimenting with multiple versions, each exploring different genres and moods. Through a meticulous fusion of preferred elements, the final composition emerged, delivering the remarkable auditory experience it embodies today. "Monster" is a track different from what you are normally used to hearing from most typical songs out there," explains Beyond Unbroken. "I can guarantee that every listener that loves to explore and discover new music will pick up on something extraordinary in this track right away."

In a world of boundaries Beyond Unbroken refuses to be defined by one genre. Founded by former Escape The Fate members, brothers Monte and Michael Money, the band habitually crosses the lines, mixing genres the way an artist mixes paint with results that often defy expectation.

The Little Mermaid, a timeless classic tale done by Disney but originally written by author Hans Christian Andersen, that was published in 1837! Years would follow with various adaptions to the silver screen and animation, including most known being done by Walt Disney Pictures 89 version of The Little Mermaid, with a remake done years later in 2023.

A stage musical would be adapted back in the fall of 2007 playing in Colorado, which would then hit Broadway in November of that same year, it running with previews in 2007, then opening in 2008, closing in 2009. Only having U.S. regional theaters and internationally showcasing subsequent productions of this stage musical over the last several years. Having seen The Little Mermaid Musical out of North Hollywood, California in 2017, at a small theater called the Cupcake Theater, that production was done a much smaller setting, but still a splendid job nonetheless.

It wouldn’t be until several years later come summer of 2024 in late June I would get to see this musical once more, but this time in a much bigger production and venue in La Mirada, California at the La Mirada Theater. This venue having a beautifully seated capacity at 1,250 seats, with this afternoon's show of 2PM being completely sold out! Upon arriving a little after doors had opened at 1PM, the snacks and bar area’s were open for consumption, with other areas having sitting, and a photo booth with The Little Mermaid banner placed where guests could gather and snap photos with their groups of families, friends, etc.

At 2PM the theater doors would open, allowing guests to find their seats in the balcony and down below in the orchestra section. Having gotten balcony seats, the view was speculator, sound was great, stage set-up just as stunning. The way they infused the way the mermaids would “swim” was catchy, with other forms of tactics like lighting, sound effects, and even bubbles would appear here and there in a very fun way. It was all truly breath taking, aw-inspiring, and just magical and mythical in its own accord.

A lot of the familiar numbers were sung like “Part of Your World”, “Kiss the Girl” and “Under the Sea”, with “Poor Unfortunate Souls” of course, as well as some newer numbers like “Human Stuff”, “One Step Closer”, “I Want The Good Times Back”, and “The Contest”, among others. Each of these were sung beautifully, by the cast, with the arrangement of characters changing to this or that one was done really well. The whole cast, crew, and orchestration was top notch quality really.

Surely this take on The Little Mermaid Musical was worth experiencing and was brought back for a reason, a lot of the shows were sold out, with this last weekend being one, with surely this production likely swimming back again; for another splash out of the water for more to take in and be a part of this world.

THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER will release their tenth studio album, Servitude, on September 27th via Metal Blade Records.

"Before the tragedy, no one ever thought this band was going to exist without Trevor."

That's THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER's co-founder Brian Eschbach telling it like it is. With the tragic passing of the band's frontman and co-founder Trevor Strnad in 2022, Eschbach, bassist Max Lavelle, drummer Alan Cassidy, and producer/guitarist Brandon Ellis were faced with a decision: Close the door on one of the most beloved death metal bands of the last twenty years, or carry on in their fallen brother's charismatic spirit?

"Everyone that's in the band now is someone that Trevor and I searched for," Eschbach says. "We spent so much time on the road together that everyone understands the mission statement. We don't really need to talk about it. We just need to make great music and try to make people happy playing it."

After a period of profound grief and deep soul-searching, Eschbach moved from guitar to vocals, setting aside his lifelong identity as a live guitarist for the survival of the band. Former THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER member Ryan Knight returned to the fold to take Eschbach's place on guitar. The new lineup made their debut in TBDM's hometown of Detroit in late October 2022 for a tribute show for Strnad.

Fast forward to right about now: THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER's new album is the one that many would have thought impossible. Servitude marks Eschbach's recorded debut as THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER's lead vocalist and lyricist - and their first with Knight on guitar since 2015's Abysmal.

"I just had to lean into it hard," Eschbach says of approaching Servitude in a completely new role. "Honestly, writing the lyrics for this album was easier for me than writing the music for the three songs that I wrote music for. I'd pick a subject, research it, and just kinda dive in. Even though it's not something I'd really ever done before, there was a natural flow to it once I started."

You can hear the thrilling results on "Aftermath," the ripping lead single, which envisions a post-apocalyptic cannibal scenario. "We wanted that one to be heard first because it's one of the faster songs on the album, if not the fastest," Eschbach says. "We wanted that very aggressive BLACK DAHLIA melodic death metal feel coming right at you. Lyrically, it's about a meteor that fucks up the whole planet, but there's still people living. Kind of like The Walking Dead, but with no zombies-so you get right to how people deal with it. And by the end, they're eating each other."

The members of THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER know that some will be skeptical of an album without Trevor's inimitable presence. But many fans have already embraced the band's decision to move forward.

"More than pressures or expectations from the fanbase, I feel their trust and support," Ellis says. "We've always done what we do for them, and they've appreciated our consistency over the years. The global outcry following Trevor's passing has shown us how important the band's music has been to so many people, and how important it is that we continue in his honor. Under all that weight, I think we all knew what needed to be done."

"We put in everything we had, and this is the album that felt right to make," he adds. "I'm proud of it and proud of the five of us. You can never please everybody, but I know that this music will be a healing and positive force for those who embrace it!"

The guitars, bass and vocals for Servitude were recorded at Ellis' home studio in New Jersey. The drums were recorded by Mark Lewis in Nashville, Tennessee where the album was also mixed. Servitude was mastered by Ted Jensen.

Servitude will be released on digipak CD, cassette, and digital formats as well as vinyl in the following color variants and special edition.

All That Remains has dropped another brand new banger with "Let You Go."

The track was produced by Josh Wilbur (Parkway Drive, Lamb Of God, Trivium, A Day To Remember), who also produced "Divine."

"As a lyricist, I find songs about the human condition to be most compelling," says singer Philip Labonte. "'Let You Go' is a great example of that. So many can relate to being in a bad relationship that you can't seem to break out of. Be it with a substance (or with a person) and this song speaks to that struggle so many of us are familiar with."

The video was directed by Tom Flynn (I Prevail, As I Lay Dying, Lamb Of God). Watch the video for the song, which kicks off with a gnarly riff and then goes for the jugular with a stadium-sized chorus and monster breakdown, right HERE.

Italian Symphonic Death Metal maestros FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE are finally back with their brand new, 6th album titled Opera, a gut-wrenching musical journey inspired by the tragic mountain climbing accident occurred to their frontman and mastermind Francesco Paoli, in 2021.

Due out August 23rd via Nuclear Blast Records, the whole album is structured like a 10-act theatrical piece, as the title itself, Opera, draws a clear thread with the everlasting tradition of Italian classical music theater combining it with the epic brutality of death and symphonic metal, which has become their trademark sound. Mixed and mastered by Grammy-nominated producer Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Epica, Arch Enemy), Opera definitely marks another step forward for the band, incorporating new suggestions into that unique blend that FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE are renowned for: sheer violence, majestic orchestrations and soaring melodies. Such an ambitious musical endeavor called for an equally impressive artwork, a team effort between two arising Italian talents (artist extraordinaire Felicita Fiorini and visionary photographer Francesco Esposito), following the path traced by baroque painters like Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi. The cover art portrays Veronica as Music, a superior entity that defeats the social and artistic decay of modern age.

With this new record, FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE are setting the bar even higher than before, pioneering what looks like a completely new sub-genre that might be called “Opera Metal”: an unprecedented mix of extreme music and theatrical elements.

“The best stories always come from pain, it's a bitter truth yet undeniable.” Francesco P. states. “We managed to turn one of the worst things in life into a work of art, that embodies our personal and artistic growth and takes the listeners on a rollercoaster of emotions, where they can experience what I've been through hand in hand with me. It's a waking nightmare but that's how life is sometimes, just scary.”

Francesco P. continues: “In my visionary representation of this journey, that begins with my near death experience and culminates in a much desired physical and psychological rebirth, I wanted to frame every single step of my calvary, as if they were acts of an "Opera Lirica", with dialogues or even confessions to imaginary characters, who have been constant presences throughout my whole (mis)adventure.

This album tosses you in a vortex of discomfort and uncontrollable feelings, where you can experience pain, fear, desperation, anger, frustration, but also resolve, courage, hope and a profound desire for redemption. I strongly believe that this album is a solid manifest of resilience, and I hope that my story will inspire people who got “lost” for whatever reason.

We can’t wait for you to hear the full album and play it live at the four corners of the world. We’re planning to take everyone to “Opera” with a massive new show, so get ready!”

With the album’s announcement comes the new single ‘Bloodclock’, a roaring song seething with anguish, pain and visionary tales of life and death.

Francesco P. says of the new song:

"What do we see right before we die? Well, with ‘Bloodclock’ I bear my witness and reveal the personal visions I had while hanging on a rope, unconscious, a few hundred meters above the ground. It's insane how reality can be much more terrifying and soul crushing than  imagination.

Soon after my discharge from the hospital, me and Francesco Ferrini started writing immediately, even if I was still bedridden and unable to play. The idea was to capture the mood of those dramatic days and make sure to keep intact the sense of desperation and fear that was still running through my veins after the accident. Later on, we worked with the others to develop those ideas and create the music that such a strong story deserves, music that takes your breath away and tosses you into a vortex of mixed feelings and discomfort. I believe we nailed it 110%.

And the video is a spectacular representation of that disaster. I pushed Martina (McLean, video director) to the limit because I knew she could find a poetic, metaphorical yet extremely impactful way to match the fury of the song with awe-inspiring images. She did an amazing job and we're proud to state that this is the best music video we've ever had in our career."

“But this song is not only about death, it's also about life. ‘I’m not dead yet’ was some sort of  mantra that became my battle-cry. The moment I woke up, I started my war to stay alive, that with time turned into a true and never-ending calvary as I'm still carrying the cross for what happened that day. But this is another story and its time is yet to come…”

Album of the year contenders DÅÅTH today reveal their latest video, "Deserving Of The Grave." The track comes off the band's latest full-length -- and first new studio output in fourteen years -- The Deceivers, out now on Metal Blade Records.

Comments Zuretti, "'Deserving Of The Grave' was a track that started with music I came up with in my head whilst flying home from somewhere. I got home and immediately jotted down the idea and sent it to Eyal, which he turned it into an entire song. The funny thing is, Eyal gets my music brain so much that he pulled all of the Danny Elfman/Gothic-era influence out of a singular idea and made an entire epic come to life. And what's even crazier is that Danny Elfman literally wrote the theme for Tim Burton's Batman in 1989 the exact same way: on a plane. This track is everything Eyal and I love about dark and moody classical/cinematic music fused together with DAATH's sound. The golden seal of the track is our friend Jeff Loomis ripping one of my favorite solos I've heard in more than a decade."

Notes Levi, "'Deserving Of The Grave' comes from a really dark place. The day it was conceived, Jesse was flying somewhere and got a strain of divine inspiration, wrote the initial idea on an airplane, and sent it to me. Simultaneously I was flying back home from witnessing the death of a loved one, and received this great idea in my email, while in a really bad mental state. Upon returning, I got to work immediately and what you're hearing is what flowed out of that terrible place. I think it's the darkest song on the album, and the vibe on it is real.

"Besides that, this song has a special place in my heart because our old buddy Jeff Loomis graced us with one of the best guitar solos I've heard in my entire life. And it was a long time coming. Fun fact, but Jeff and DAATH almost worked together back before the hiatus. It came so close to happening and it was one of my biggest musical disappointments. All I can say is that it was worth the wait. His solo in this song is the stuff of legends."

Adds Loomis, "I had a great time recording the solo for 'Deserving Of The Grave' for the new DÅÅTH album The Deceivers! Eyal came up with a very dark background that made things easy for me when it came to putting the paint on canvas for a fitting solo. Thanks again for letting me be a part of such a musical masterpiece."

The Northeastern dark horse THY WILL BE DONE has dropped another new single, "Encore Abomination", marking their second release in four years. Following the recent bone-crushing "Prelude To Apostasy", which garnered widespread acclaim and even faced controversy with its provocative video flagged by YouTube for age restriction.

"Encore Abomination" harnesses the raw power and intensity that THY WILL BE DONE has been revered for, blending early 90's groove metal influences with a ferocious slam metal-inspired chorus, the track showcases the band's evolution while staying true to their signature sound that fans have come to cherish.

“We all had some things to tend to in our personal lives and were quiet for a bit. We wanted 'Encore Abomination' to hit like a sledgehammer. It's unapologetically furious, heavy, and has a groove that goes for the jugular," says frontman J.Costa. "After the overwhelming response to 'Prelude To Apostasy', we knew we had to deliver something that would not only satisfy but surpass expectations."

THY WILL BE DONE continues to defy conventions with each release, and "Encore Abomination" is set to further solidify their reputation as purveyors of heavy music. With speculation of an upcoming album in the works, anticipation is at an all-time high as the band prepares to unleash their fury to the world once again.

The band will be supporting DEAD TO FALL in Brooklyn, NY in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of their 'Villainy & Virtue' album, and was recently announced as part of the second wave of artists on the 10th annual RPM Fest in Massachusetts along with MISERY INDEX, PRONG, JASTA, BONGZILLA and others.

June 21st is Midsummer's Day, the day of the summer solstice and the the longest day of the year. A perfect day for the release of the new LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE song "Shimmering" - a gothic summer song for long party nights and also the first single from the band's new album to be released mid-2025 via Steamhammer/SPV.

Borrowing from the glorious eighties gothic era and paired with modern, hooky songwriting and powerful production from the Kohlekeller Studios, the track brings back memories of their successful album 'Filthy Notes For Frozen Hearts' released in 2006. An album that hearkens to the days of MTV, when Bam Margera played its songs repeatedly and even named his record label Filthy Note after the album's title.

Listen to "Shimmering" on YouTube HERE.

During the fall of last year 2023, heavy metal act Ghost out of Sweden had formed back in 2006, have since toured extensively, releasing four albums, debuting the “Imperatour” in 2022 through 2023, where they would conclude said tour in Los Angeles, California with two back to back nights in Inglewood, California at The Forum. This night being filmed for what would eventually be a live album and feature length concert film of these nights. It would be titled “Rite Here Rite Now” a lyric from one of their tracks known far and wide.

Lead singer Tobias Forge, would be backed by a band of masked musicians known only as “Nameless Ghouls” this night, and close to ten months later, this concert film would release on the BIG screen in the summer of 2024 on June 20th 2024. Screening across the globe, fans would gather, dressed up on full make up, to others adoring hats, t-shirts, vests and jackets even. Some even sporting the concert t-shirt, of the actual show, of those who were luckily enough to attend it. Opening night is when I got to check out the film, because when it was first announced, that was the only option, when such excitement was said, more dates were added from June 20th to June 23rd 2024, catching it with a small crowd in an independent theater known as the Laemmle Noho 7 in North Hollywood, California for 7PM.

Fans grabbed their snacks upon arrival, with others heading into the theater, taking their seats, the room dimmed with previews, then darkened with an announcement made saying how the fans in said room, were allowed for the next 10 minutes or so, to pull out their phones, take photos, videos, do whatever before the actual film would commence. After the countdown had finished, the movie would begin, have a voice over discuss how Ghost would briefly become, then showcase an object hit The Forum venue, where the band was arriving in their touring van, and they would exit said vehicle and enter the venue, arriving on the stage, to begin playing for the next 2 hours and 30 minutes!

Seventeen songs were sung this night, some included “Absolution”, “Twenties”, “Mary On A Cross”, “Kiss The Go Goat” and “Square Hammer” to name off a few. A bonus track titled “The Future Is A Foreign Land”, was played during the end credits, and yes there was an after credits scene that caused utter joy but disappointment as well. But the actual concert experience, provided with the filming captured, was done really well, because it caught two shows on two different nights, this film contained a narrative story that was based upon the fictional lore surrounding the band and its characters. Due to filming there was a strict no phone policy for those in attendance that night. Getting the chance to attend the second night back on September 12th 2023, was a night to remember. Re-experiencing it this evening was even better!

Directed by Alex Ross Perry and cinematographer editor Robert Kolodny, who have previously worked with Ghost prior, worked on this big screen adaption and again all that was done for it was flawless. The sound and look just made this concert more enjoyable. The music was amazing, to hear yet again, it is worth experiencing once, at least. This release receiving a live album and later DVD release in the coming months, who would not want to bring this content into their homes, it is something to behold, cherish, and enjoy.

Melodic death metal act SCYTHE OF SORROW out of Finland, have released several single's, with a debut full-length titled "Raven's Cry Of Despair", released just last year in 2023. The band has been making their rounds upon social media, I myself coming across them via TikTok! The band does have plans to play shows this fall, with them focusing on themselves, playing live as soon as possible. Founder, lead guitarist, vocalist, composer Petteri Scythe goes into discussion about how the band formed, the music they have released, and how they sound a lot like another popular band out of Finland!

1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or it came out just like that?

It was simple and spontaneous. "Scythe" refers to Children of Bodom. They had the reaper, whose attribute is the scythe. It's a sign for their fans that they can find here what they miss after CoB disbanded. "Sorrow" can be said to relate to the themes of our songs, but it also just sounds dark and fits well with metal music. The whole name, "Scythe of Sorrow" sounds awesome to me and is perfect for chanting at concerts!

2. What is the genre that you play and why did you want to play it?

Generally speaking, we play Melodic Death Metal, but in our music, you can really hear influences ranging from black metal to 80s hair metal. All of this has shaped me as a musician, and I express it in my compositions. It's not that we specifically aim to play this way – it came about naturally.

3. Did you all know one another even before the band had been formed?

No, before the band was formed, I only knew Kacper (bassist) from when I lived in Poland, but he joined the band over a year after it was established. Previously, he played in another band in Poland. Since then, the band has undergone some lineup changes, and Julius (drummer) and Hades (rhythm guitarist) are new faces whom I didn't know before, but who came along at the right place and time.

4. To those who may take notice, your inspiration or influence is likely Finnish act Children Of Bodom am I right?

Absolutely, without Children of Bodom and Alexi Laiho, this band wouldn't exist. Their music and Alexi’s influence were the reasons I decided to move from Poland to Finland to form this band. His playing style has greatly impacted my own and shaped my growth as a musician. Their influence is clearly visible, and we don't hide it at all – Children of Bodom is definitely our inspiration!

5. Why go the route of being in similarity to Children Of Bodom, your musical style, font text, appearance, were you a tribute to COB before Scythe Of Sorrow was created or how did these likeness come into formation?

It just came naturally – ever since I discovered Children of Bodom, I fell in love with their style of play. When I started creating my own compositions, they just naturally sounded similar. As for the appearance – that's just how I've looked since birth, and I dressed and behaved this way even before I knew what Children of Bodom was. The font choice has always appealed to me and is unequivocally associated with our musical style, serving as a kind of signpost for CoB fans. We're not a tribute band; we play our own compositions and offer our own style and personality. You just need to look at us with a clear mind, rather than blindly labeling us as a copy.

6. How long have you been a band and how did you get started?

The band was formed in 2021 when I moved from Poland to Finland specifically for this purpose. I founded it myself, and initially, I was the only member. I have been writing compositions since 2015, refining them over time. In the meantime, several musicians joined the lineup, and several also left. In 2022, we released our first demos, and after a positive reception, we focused on releasing our debut album.

7. What was your latest release of music and can you talk about that a bit, any newer music coming soon?

Our latest release is our debut album, "Raven's Cry Of Despair" which came out in August 2023. It's the result of several years of work and the fulfillment of my dream of releasing my own album. The album was very well received and, most importantly, it gave us quite a bit of exposure. Currently, we're focusing on polishing our material to start playing live shows in the fall. As for new music – since we're planning to start playing live this year, we won't release a new album (although the compositions are more or less ready). However, we're preparing a cover that should be out soon.

8. Is there any significance behind your band name?

I think I accidentally answered that in the first question, so we can skip it :)

9. What are the goals in mind for the future of the band?

Our goal is to gain as many fans and as much recognition as possible. It would be a dream come true to find a record label that would support our work and help us grow. We want to play at the biggest festivals in the world!

10. Have you considered releasing covers of Children of Bodom tracks, if so which would you pick and why?

We don't consider releasing them as recordings, but it's likely that we'll play classics like "Bed Of Razors" "Angels Don't Kill" or "In Your Face" etc. at concerts.

11. Does the band have any shows or touring plans?

Yes, we plan to start playing live in the fall. We don't have a specific date yet, but we're aiming for around October and November, although whether we'll succeed remains to be seen. We will definitely play in Helsinki later this year, even by the end of December.

12. What about the plans for the rest of 2024?

Currently, we're focusing on refining our material to start playing live as soon as possible, and that's our main goal for this year. In the meantime, as I mentioned, we'll release a cover, and we'll continue to develop our social media presence.

13. Where can people find out more about you and your music, merch etc.

You can listen to us on all major streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, etc., as well as on YouTube. Our albums and merchandise are available on our Bandcamp. We recently added our first merch there, and we plan to add even more this year! Additionally, you can find us on social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. You can find us everywhere by searching for 'Scythe Of Sorrow'. Thank you for the interview, it was great to have this conversation. Greetings from Finland and Beware The Scythe!

Dark epic symphonic metallers VALFREYA have several album's out, with newer music in the works. Some shows have been set, with new member changes as well, with the band just moving forward with creating music as much as possible! The band discusses of their sound, plans for the future, and music creativeness.

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

Corinne (vocal) started the band in 2009 which Daniel (guitar) joined shortly after. Our first record Path to Eternity was release in 2012. Eventually Jérémy (Drum) joined the band and we release our second album Promised Land in 2017. Shortly after the release the release of Promised Land couple members left and Erik (guitar) and Anis (Bass) joined the band. After two album folk/viking inspire record we wanted to change the sound of Valfreya for a more darker symphonic style so we recruited Maude as a violinist and this lead us to our new album Dawn of Reckoning. Sadly through the process of releasing Dawn of Reckoning Maude and Anis left the band but we are back on our feet we amazing new member Eva (violin) and Julian (Bass).

2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?

Our music especially our first two records are heavily inspire by Norse mythology. So Vafreya is just the combination of Valhalla and Freya.

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

We are Montreal based and the scene in Montreal have always been great. Lots of legendary band come from here such, but the scene had a couple draw back in the last years with a lot of small metal venue closing but it is still going strong with plenty of new band and concert. Sanguine Glacialis, Fall of Stasis and Ulfhednar are bands worth checking out.

4. How would you describe your style?

Dark epic symphonic blend of black metal and death metal with complex and narrative song structure.

5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?

We have release three albums. Our first is album is pretty black metal with a lot of classy folk/viking metal inspiration. The second is in the same vein but more death metal sounding and for Dawn of Reckoning we went for a darker symphonic sound and we ditch most of the typical folk/viking. On the new record we also explore new sound we have a song with a doom metal influence and this slow pace heavy song contrast with fast pace tremolo picking/blast beat black metal of our first album. For those who want something smoother we also have two acoustic album where we made acoustic cover of our metal songs.

6. Do you have any new music in the works?

Yes but it is to early in the process to call those songs.

7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?

We have two shows in June we couldn’t tour as much we wanted because of the recent change of member (new violinist, new bassist and new live drummer).

8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

Keep on making as much music as possible.

9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

You can listen to our music on all platforms and you can buy our stuff on our bandcamp.

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

Our aggressive symphonic sound and our intricate arrangement.

Prog rock band The Boxx Orchestra from The Netherlands recently released their second album ‘The Horn of Plenty’ on OOB Records. Great plans for the future; touring and work upon the next album is already set in stone. Members of the band go into talks about all of this right below!

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

Keyboard player and songwriter Jan Boekestein explains; In the seventies and eighties I played in several symphonic rock bands and wrote a huge repertoire of (symphonic) rock songs. In 2016 we started as The Boxx Orchestra to play these songs in a modernized way. Lead singer Ria Mulder, started as a bass player and later became lead singer in various bands. Guitarist Jos van der Zanden, played acoustic and electric guitar in several cover bands. Bass player Walter Hüsstege, multi-instrumentalist and composer with prog rock band Cause 17 which released three studio albums. The line up was completed in 2018 by drummer Kees Schollen who played  in various rock bands.

2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?

Kees; One of the former bands Jan played in, back in the eighties, was called The Boxx. The Orchestra was added to emphasize the more symphonic style.

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

Walter; We are based in the southern part of The Netherlands. There are lots of bands mostly cover- and tribute bands. However there are also some very good prog rock bands like Argus, Glorious Wolf, Flamborough Head, My Own Army, Ice. In the past there were more prog rock bands from The Netherlands with a great international reputation (Kayak, Finch, Earth & Fire, Knight Area).

4. How would you describe your style?

Jan; The music of The Boxx Orchestra can best be described as power rock with a lot of symphonic influences. Sometimes complex almost ‘classic’ and then again "straight between the eyes” rock. The songs are filled with melody together with harmonic and rhythmic 'surprises'. You can call it prog rock but we sometimes like to step out of the box and experiment with other styles.

5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?

Ria; In 2021 we released our first album called ‘Out of the Boxx’ preceded by two single tracks ‘The Eye of the Storm’ and ‘A Star Almost Fell’. On May 26th this year we released our second album ‘The Horn of Plenty’ on prog label OOB Records. Both albums received very good reviews and got much airplay on various prog rock radio channels. We are developing more in a direction where the basic ideas for songs from Jan are being arranged by the band, instead of a complete and arranged song. Jos; further we are very lucky to have Walter in the band who is, besides a very talented bass player, also an excellent graphic designer who takes care of both album cover design and all video effects at our live shows.

6. Do you have any new music in the works?

Kees; Jan still has a lot of new material ‘on the shelf’. Also Walter is starting to write material. So more albums will be coming up.

7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?

Jan; we are planning to tour intensively after this summer; both in The Netherlands and throughout Europe. First gig coming up is summer festival Oekelpop in The Netherlands (Jult 6th ).Meanwhile we are working hard to improve our live shows (especially the sound quality and visual effects). Of course we are blessed with Ria our impressive lead singer, who steals the show!

8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

Ria; Releasing more new albums, doing as much as possible liveshows. We have enough material for at least two more albums and are still writing new songs.

9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

Jos; we are available on all streaming platforms and CD’s can be bought via OOB Records (https://oob-records.com/).

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

Walter; A very close band performing nice melodic compositions with lyrics telling a story and performed by a great lead singer.
