Alternative rockers GOLDFISH DON'T BOUNCE talk of their handful of songs released, with new music always being worked upon, along with some shows happening here and there. The band talk of these things, and world domination!
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
The band is made up of: Charlie Butterworth - guitars and vocals, Marco Power - bass and Callum J Burke - drums and backing vocals. Quite uniquely, the band is actually made up of 3 lead guitarists, all playing out of position.
Charlie and Callum have been in bands together for years and after some time working on different projects, they came back together to create a new band. After auditioning a number of drummers and not finding the right one, Callum decided to change from being lead guitarist in the band to being the drummer. Marco had been in a band with Callum a few years previous and there was a (very drunken) chance reunion at a street party for the Queen’s Jubilee back in 2022, where he signed up to take on bass duties.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
Marco had the name for a number of years, but didn’t find the right band to use it for…until this one. We can confirm no fish or animals were harmed in the making of the band name 🙂 .
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We are based in Manchester, England. Manchester has had a massive music scene over the years and it shows no signs of slowing down. There are some good bands on the scene but far too many to mention.
4. How would you describe your style?
We are very much an alt rock/rock n roll band but we do fuse our songs with other genres. We have sprinklings of funk, blues and even psychedelic rock, to mention just a few styles. It should mean there is a bit of something for everyone. We have been called “the genre benders”, so you can take from that what you will.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
We have released 4 songs so far, with the very latest (Heart and Soul) coming out on 1st July and it is a ballad, because every rock band needs one, right? Before that we released our debut single, Hard Fast Quick, which came out on 7th February 2024. It is only 1 minute 35 seconds long and does exactly as the title suggests. Cheap Thrills followed closely after and that is our heavier song with some fruity guitar solos. Finish Line was released on 8th April and that is our groove rock effort. No song is really similar to another, but you can tell it is us. We kind of have a signature.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
Yes, always! We are currently recording our debut album called “PHISH PHOOD” (Fish Food) with international producer, Neil Treppas. We are releasing most of the songs from the album as singles, so we will be releasing a new song every 6-8 weeks for the foreseeable future, which will keep us busy.
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We are picking up a few shows here and there. We played Manchester Academy on 22nd June this year, which was incredible. We have a show on 30th August at Lion’s Den in Manchester as part of a showcase for a Manchester based label, so we are gearing up for that. As we are working on our album, we are just picking up a few shows where we can. We will be far more active once the album is released.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
World domination! And really, we are just focusing on working hard, creating songs we are proud of and controlling the factors we can control. While we don’t have any hard set goals where we need to be at a certain stage by a certain date, we just keep reassessing where we are and see where we can move to next. Nothing is off limits so we will happily take a world tour right now!
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
We are on all the major streaming platforms and some of the awful ones as well. You can find all our socials on our website: https://goldfishdontbounce.band. We are currently looking into merchandising so we don’t have anything to buy just yet, but this is coming soon so fear not, you will soon be able to get your hands on Goldfish Don’t Bounce fish bowls 🙂.
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
We would love people to think we are different. It’s a very difficult thing to achieve when pretty much all chord progressions and melodies have been used already, but we do have something unique in our sound. You will either love us or hate us, and we are comfortable with that..
