Labyrinth a 1986 fantasy film, staring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly, has become a cult classic, so much in fact, that in 1997, a masquerade ball that took place in the film, was brought to life with a Labyrinth Ball, known as the Labyrinth of Jareth Masquerade Ball or LOJ. An annual masquerade ball and cosplay event, happening in Los Angeles, California ever since, with two different locations, its current taking place in Downtown Los Angeles at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, with an attendance reaching over 5K! This year’s festivities were sold out, with loads of people from in and around California and outside the state and country came to take place in this event.
Happening this late summer weekend August 16th and 17th 2024, the VIP tickets would sell out, with single day selling out, and weekend passes as well as selling out too! The crowd was BIG but not as massive as it sounds. Lots came dressed in fancy attire, ball gowns, suits, to others cosplaying furry creatures like wolves, unicorns, and other creative characters. All ages came out from kids to elder folk, it made everyone smile and be excited with attending.
Each of the dance rooms, took place in several spots, with an outdoor area featuring snacks, pizza, and drinks. Another area featured vendors selling jewelry, crowns, dice, and much more. With other area’s containing photo opportunities, wild life with owls present, to even a tea party experience. Every which way, you saw people adored in their attire, dancing away, or chit chatting with others taking in their experiences taking place right there, right then.

Having attending the Friday night, first night of this event, was the VIP option, it allowed all there to arrive early, and get early admission, shown around the whole building of its various rooms, dance rooms, tea party, vendors and much else too. After doors had opened, everyone else was welcomed inside and took into the atmosphere at hand. This event lasting from 8PM-1AM, having various dances, and performances with a live band, inter-putative dances, acrobats, and silent story telling segments it was all so much fun! One of the best parts was where it brought the movie to life, playing some of the tracks, including the one this whole event was centered on “As The World Falls Down” by David Bowie, that track played in the film, and performed via DJ here tonight, it was a breath taking experience to get to dance to with my partner.
All in all, it was an experience to be had, taking in a little something different, yet unique. In short, its like a high school Prom, except much more elaborate and elegant like. Lots dressed up more nicer than usual, with everyone there having fun and excited for that night’s events from start to finish.
