This past summer of 2024 is when thrash legends Sepultura out of Brazil had made the announcement of a farewell tour; in celebration of their 40 years together! A North American run of said tour titled the "Celebrating Life Through Death Farewell Tour" would go across the U.S. in the early fall of 2024, featuring acts such as Obituary, Agnostic Front and Claustrofobia. Running from September into October, making a stop in Los Angeles, California in Downtown Los Angeles at The Novo venue, near the Crypto Area and Peacock Theater. The show would be close to selling out, having the balcony section being closed off, featuring only roughly 10 rows available, up top got filled up towards the end of the evening.
Having gotten to the venue later on, catching the last two performers of the evening Obituary and Sepultura, Obituary brought their Florida death metal from the east coast to the west coast, seeing them play a few times now, tonight was no exception, because they got the crowd into their performance from start to finish. A lot of their songs included such as "Chopped in Half/Turned Inside Out", "War", "Deadly Intentions" and even a cover by Celtic Frost called "Circle of the Tyrants", as well as fan favorite "Slowly We Rot". Their slow mellow death metal momentum brought plenty of cheers from the crowd of on lookers, enjoying the energy ever flowing back at them. Truly an act to catch at least once to see their legendary status as the icons that they are within the death metal scene.
OBITUARY:
Following suite would be headliners Sepultura going on to play for about an hour and 15 minutes roughly, consisting of 20 solid tracks, varying the span of said 40 years together. Sadly no appearance or mention of the brothers who started the band from years ago. But material was performed nonetheless.... Thus including such songs as "Arise", "Ratamahatta", "Roots Bloody Roots", as well as other tracks like "Kairos", "Escape the Void", "Agony of Defeat", "Guardians of Earth" and "Means to an End", as well as many more that the old and new fans enjoyed hearing.
It would have been nice if the brothers had made an appearance or mention but perhaps in a future reuniting of the band, if they ever make a comeback later down the line, only time will turn perhaps.... But regardless Sepultura's performance was classic, with a lot of classics included within their set. The heaviness and raw energies thrown out were well accepted. The whole theater provided cheers and shouts of approval, giving this rendition of Sepultura appraisal.
SEPULUTURA:
All in all this trek of a tour was done right, bringing forth a band within the thrash scene that has had quite a history with an ending conclusion that would be the final farewell for good but maybe not forever....
