King Diamond, a heavy metal artist out of Denmark, has brought a U.S. tour to us Californians this fall on of all days Black Friday! Taking place at YouTube Theater, in Inglewood, California, to a semi-sold out crowd, fans were aligned to buy merch at the one merch booth available, while all others headed inside to grab seats, snacks, and drinks. Having felt a little under the weather, making it to the show was what mattered most. Catching openers Night Demon and Overkill, with King Diamond headlining the evening.
Entitled the "Saint Lucifer's Hospital 1920" trek, the frontman has commented that "This is Saint Lucifer's Hospital. Enter if you dare!
"We have been busy putting this ever-growing horror story together, and it's still growing. I know the end of it, but how we will get there will be a long trip. There are so many characters, and so many unexpected things along this journey. It's a crazy family on another timeline in 1920, where I experienced some hard times, and they have to come to our time to steal from us to survive. This is the most elaborate thing we have ever done, that goes for the stage production as well.
"There will be additional backing vocals by Myrkur and she'll be playing organ for songs that need it. There will be some horrific surprises taking place on stage, but we are not to be held responsible since we are on a whole different timeline in 1920. It was back at the time when medicine was going through a dark period with lots of testing on human beings in order to progress medicine.
"This is Saint Lucifer's Hospital, also known as The Institute. Enter if you dare!"
With that said, this tour, featured California act Night Demon, bringing their own angst of heavy metal, keeping it more on the range of New Wave of Heavy Metal, capturing a lot of fans, who got their style of heaviness. This trio act kept the momentum alive and well, making their music catchy, and totally upbeat. Their set may have went rather quickly, but it did not disappoint.
NIGHT DEMON:
Following them would be thrash metal titans that is Overkill. Whose set had some minor mishaps with microphone set-ups to some other issues, but once those were resolved, all went well with their thrashy set. Lots of heavy yet fast material, keeping the crowd at bay. The frontman kept the entertainment on point, interacting with the crowd, during some songs, with the finale track being "Fuck You". Making quite the riot with the audience, but keep the music vivid yet fast and tight.
OVERKILL:
Next up would be headliners King Diamond, whose set up was a hospital that would be centered on the band's not one but next two concept albums coming out very soon. The stage featured the doctor, nurse, patients, light show, dancers, characters with lots of elements of surprise. The setlist included such songs as "Halloween", "VooDoo", "Spider Lilly", "Sleepless Nights", and "Abigail", to name off just a few. A lot of these and others featured, had the crowd chanting and wanting so much more. The characters and music playing off one another, made the whole theming and story come to life. King Diamond, is a funny guy, with even funnier vocal chords, but his music is what makes him so unique.
