Party pop rockers AMYJO DOH AND THE SPANGLES have two album's out, with lots of plans to play lots of shows for this year, with even more music coming around soon enough as well! The band discusses how they came together and what else is planned for them.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
We are 4:
AmyJo Doherty – front woman, lead vocals
David Lancho- Guitarist
German Ormaechea – bass
Matty Tyack - Drums
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
Spangles has many connotations.. it can mean shiny and sparkly, It can mean that you’ve slightly over-done it….and it also refers to mix of English and Spanish which we are! In the Spanish dictionary it translates as ‘sequins’
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We’re based in Madrid and it’s a great scene really in the sense that there’s loads of great musicians and artists. Sadly though the underground scene is very difficult because they are closing more and more live venues and many of them now charge a lot to play there. They places seem more interested in having Djs and people spending money on drinks than have new bands to play and it’s tough! There are people working really hard though like ourselves and DJ Moderno and Post Plastic World.
4. How would you describe your style?
Hmm… I always feel like each song is a world in itself and I don’t like to put limitations on myself as an artist by choosing a genre to label myself with. I would say Party Punk, but we also have more rocky or pop sounding songs and even SKA.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
Lots of EP's and a first album called "Calle de The Spangles" and we have just released our second, "Spangle Landia with Strap Originals".
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
As we have just released this album we are touring and playing out a lot. But of course there are always new songs coming through!
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
Yes! We have lots of dates in Spain and We are VERY EXCITED to be coming over to the UK at the end of this month:
24th January- Lexington, London
25th Jan – The Life Boat, Margate
26th Jan – The Horn, St. Albans
And then we have a tour in Germany at the start of Feb too…..just finalising the details of that one!
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
The dream is really to spread love and joy through our music to as many eras and hearts as possible! I would LOVE to play in Mexico! And as an underground band we are always hoping to get into some festivals!
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
You can hear us on all of the digital platforms and buy our stuff through the Strap originals website… or even better at a live show! I need to try and find out what happened to the bandcamp password and set up selling stuff on there!
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
That everything is love and anything is possible with a bit of rock and roll!
