Metal project band BURIAL EXTRACTION have a debut EP, album, with new material being worked upon now! An all new single is expected out soon enough. No shows or tours set yet, but maybe a few shows could happen down the line, for now it's all about the music, and see where it can go! Vocalist / guitarist / bassist Brian Lyda does the talking of all this content below!
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
I started the band (originally) back in high school in 1993. I was listening to a lot of Mortification
and Napalm Death, we were all listening to those bands and others. I don't remember who came up with the name, but someone said “Burial” and it stuck. We broke up like a lot of bands do a couple of years later; so, when Derek and I got together to record “A Shadow Of Things To Come,” our first release, I wanted to carry on the name of my band from high school. Five of the eight tracks from that record were songs that I wrote and we played back in the band in the early 90's, so it just made sense to keep the name, but I added “Extraction” just to keep it a little more original.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
I've always loved faster and heavier music, whether it was punk, thrash, or cross-over, but when I heard the band Death and then latter Mortification, that's the style I just felt most aligned with musically. Its fun to play and write; its like the jazz of metal.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
I was familiar with Derek prior to recording with him, but initially, he was brought in as a session musician. We clicked right out of the gate.
4. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local
bands you could recommend?
Right now, Burial Extraction is more of a project. Both Derek and I have played in other bands, but we don't live near each other. He's in Amarillo and I'm in the north Dallas area, but there's a ton of bands out here! Two that I really like are Hope Deferred and Every Thought Captive.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
God and scripture.
6. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
My lyrics are all based on scripture and theology. God can be hard to comprehend, but at the same time, He reveals Himself in His Word and there's endless things to write about. It's fascinating!
7. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
I write everything on bass. I usually start with a hook or lyric in my head and just build on it from there. I record a demo and then Derek adds the guitar. We then get together in the studio to work out the fine details and add drums (Derek plays the drums, we don't use drum machines or midi), additional guitar and dynamics.
8. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
We've released a record called “A Shadow Of Things To Come” in 2023 and an E.P. called “Expelled” in 2024. We're working on new material now. There's a lot of old school death metal, some thrash and some melodic death metal in our music. Both Derek and I prefer older bands; there's no deathcore or metalcore influences in our music.
9. Do you have any new music in the works?
We should have a new single out very soon.
10. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We've talked about it and we'd love to, but the distance makes it difficult. We'll take a break from recording after this next release and probably work out a few shows.
11. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
We're just going to keep recording and see how far we can push it. With each release, we keep making a few changes to the music so that it doesn't all sound the same. This next release is going to be a lot faster than our previous songs.
12. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
We're on all streaming platforms and sell records, CD'S and merch on Bandcamp.
