Emo punks LIFE IN IDLE have not one but two full-length album's out, with some single's out as well as all new music expected out soon enough! They will also be touring this year, moving forward as band, creating music, playing shows, touring, and pushing themselves full speed ahead!
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
Al: It came pretty naturally, you know. Joe, David, and I were all in a science class together freshman year. I came up with the name back then. It was something I had written on a drum pad of mine, and it just stuck. We cycled through a few older names during the process, but ultimately, we ended up with Life in Idle.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
Al: We started out as more of a pop-punk outfit, but we always felt this edge in us... in our writing. When we took the next batch of songs (Continuity Errors) to the studio, we knew we wanted to dive deep into that classic 2000s emo sound.
David: So we went to Gary Cioni at Sound Acres Recording Studio for our album. He’s considered a top producer in the genre, and we really felt the magic click as these songs came together. We also had Chris Freeman from Hot Mulligan as our co-producer on the album.
Shai: Emo for life!
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
David: Yeah, we were all in school together. John and Shai were two grades ahead of Al, Joe, and me. We all did high school marching band together. Also, John is my cousin. We’re kind of a family-type band, you know—haha.
4. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
Al: We’re based out of Dayton, Ohio. The music scene here is rad. There are tons of bands, shows, and genres to choose from.
David: All the bands from our hometown are great. There are so many to recommend. The list goes on, but a few of our homies are Better Anyway, Midview, and Knavery.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Al: A lot inspiration comes from a mix of personal experiences, emotions, and the world around me. I often find myself inspired by moments of vulnerability or raw honesty, whether they’re my own or from people I care about. We draw from a lot of that in our songs & stories.
6. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
David: Our songs often depict and reflect battles with negative thoughts and overcoming adversity, both within and around yourself.
Joe: A lot of our lyrics touch on topics like mental health, relationships, self-discovery, and resilience. We also explore themes like societal pressures, finding hope in difficult times, and confronting inner demons. Ultimately, we aim to write songs that feel authentic and relatable, giving listeners something to hold onto during their own journey through life.
7. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
David: Most songs are a collaboration between all of us. Sometimes it starts with a guitar idea, then we add drums and go from there. Other times, we have lyrics and build the song off of a phrase or an idea. So far, Al has written the bulk of our lyrics, while I edit them. I write some and John also writes for us occasionally.
8. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
Al: So far, we’ve put out two albums and three singles—four if you count the original version of our song “Catch 22.”
David: Our music blends elements of emo and alternative with honest, thought-provoking lyrics. Listeners can expect a mix of high-energy tracks and emotionally driven pieces that explore themes like mental health, relationships, personal growth, and more. Each release reflects our evolution as a band, both musically and personally, so there’s always a lot of passion and authenticity behind what we create. We aim to provide listeners with raw, cathartic musical expression.
9. Do you have any new music in the works?
Al: Oh YEAH.
David: We do! Right now, we’re finalizing the details, but you can expect all-new music from us in the coming months of 2025.
10. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
David: We have a tour to announce later this year, along with several local shows and weekenders beyond that. Maybe some festival action again…who knows!
Al: We’re always playing and performing our hearts out, but a big focus this year is on studio time as we dive deeper into a new musical process.
11. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
David: We have a ton of music written, and we just want to keep going as a band. There are so many ups and downs when you’re in a band, so we’ve made it a goal to roll with the punches. No matter where life (in idle) takes us, we want this band to be more than just a fallback—it’s a community.
Al: As a band, we’re always looking ahead and pushing ourselves creatively. In the near future, we plan to release more music, continue experimenting with our sound, and connect with our audience on an even deeper level. Touring is definitely on our radar too.
John: We love the energy of live shows and the chance to interact with fans face-to-face. We also want to keep growing, collaborating with other artists, and finding new ways to make an impact on the world through our music.
12. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
David: You can listen to us on all streaming platforms—Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and many more. We’re also on pretty much all social media. Al’s our social media guy.
Al: We have an online Shopify store if you want to support us further. Right now, we’re selling shirts, CDs, and bracelets. Everything is handmade, printed, packaged, and shipped by us DIY style.
