Rockers RUNAWAY FIRE is a fire you may not want to run away from... because it's an alternative indie rock band out of Utah! They have been creating music for sometime now, releasing said music in the form of an album, with a follow-up album out this summer! They even some shows and tours set for this year as well! The band discusses music, shows, tours, and much more below!
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
Me and the super talented keyboardist, Marci Allen, were kickin' it on the couch, and we were talking about band names. When "Runaway Fire" came out of her mouth, it was like space time stopped and the universe opened a door and said "Yep, that's it."
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
People say we are alternative, rock n' roll, indie, etc. I've never thought about the genre. I love rock drummers and how they create these epic landscapes to support a song. When we got Ian Shaw on board to play the drums, it was like WOAH- time to turn it up and write some fun songs.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
I knew the keyboardist, Marci, but not the others. We needed a bass player so bad, I made a home made sign and put it in our front yard for a month. It said, "BASS PLAYER NEEDED" with an arrow pointing to our front door! Our world class drummer is pretty known in the local music community and was able to find Chase.
4. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We are based out of Utah. I say that because I grew up in Southern Utah, Chase grew up in the middle, and Marci grew up in Salt Lake County. We also are very lucky to play all over this amazing, supportive state. Ha ha it's funny, but some of my favorite shows have been right here in Utah. The music scene in Utah is awesome! I can tell you some great local bands: Mr. OK and the Last Light, Parade the Bug, The Elders, Ginger and the Gents, Paige Fish, Yes Oui Si, New American Gothic, Projekt Listen, Riley Rawlings, and for sure look into Spirit Machines (aka Pepper Rose). Those are just a few off the top of my head. I think we have played with most of them and they are all awesome!
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
Everything!
6. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
Joy, Love, Happiness, Sadness, Wonder, Sex, Mystery, curious patterns that show up in the universe, people. Lately, I'll get super inspired by the members in our band. Our bass player, Chase Sylvester, was laying a funky slap bass over this grungy rock riff, and it took my brain to another galaxy. It changed the whole meaning and feeling of the song (for the better). I try to hide secret messages in our songs sometimes, but I don't know if anyone likes us enough to figure them out yet.
7. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
Yes, I do. Every song happens differently for me. I know some people have a system, but I would say almost every song is created different in our band. Whether I am running through the forest in a kilt with a Native American flute trying to connect to the long lost spirits of the forest, or waiting at the DMV. My favorite process is when I don't have to do anything at all and the whole song just flows through my mind. It's only happened that easily a handful of times. Sometimes I'll throw an idea to Marci and her creativity is insane! I swear I can give her two or three notes and a thought in my head and she pops out a master piece. In all seriousness, I have a muse I cannot disclose at this time.
8. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
We have released an album online- "Frozen in Time". Go check out the song "Wool Socks". That was one that came instantly, and the band just wrote the coolest parts. I love playing that one live. It is amazing seeing and hearing the crowd sing along once in a while.
9. Do you have any new music in the works?
YES! Tons. We have a second album coming out this summer.
10. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We are putting together our summer and fall tours right now while playing a bunch of local shows in between. Go to our website and come party with us!!!
11. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
I want to create a cult, take over the world, and shift everyone's consciousness into a higher dimension in the name of love. Just kidding. Music is the biggest part of all of our lives in the band. We eat, breath, and sleep this stuff. Playing together when there is an awesome crowd, is one of the most fulfilling things on the planet. I love being in the crowd or in the band. I don't think there is anything better than a live, original band. With that passion, we want to grow the music community and shine everywhere we go. Thank you so much for having us. Your website is really cool and is just the thing that will make the world a better place. Much love to you and everyone reading this.
12. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
