Horror post punk death rockers DEAD BORN BABIES, have been around for sometime, releasing music for quite a while now, A full-length is expected with shows as well, the main person behind it all Fher Knight, does the talking about how this band came to be, the music, and further plans ahead.
1. Where did you get the idea for the band name, you planned it or came out just like that?
The name of the band came from a previous trauma when I was a child. I always liked horror movies and those kind of topics, so I thought my trauma would suit this horror genre. The original idea mostly came from a sad memory of when I was a child. I remember at age of 8 years old . My mother had a miscarriage, and I was traumatized about it ever since. I went to hospital with my Father that day, the new born brother was suppose to be given birth. And then, surprisingly the excitement turned into a horror scene. My father and the doctor were not careful enough with me at the hospital. I was expecting to hear good news about the little brother. Instead, I was sitting on the hallway at age of 8. My father and the doctor went in the hospital room to talk to my mother, they gave her the terrible news of a no born baby. The seat I was on, was just next to that room where my mother received those awful news, so I got to hear everything. It was heart breaking to hear my mother breaking into madness and crying like I never knew it was possible to happen. Ever since that event I had those, No Born Babies words stuck to my head. When I thought about a horror name for the band. That tragedy memory suited well.
2. Why did you want to play this genre?
I always liked underground music. Post-punk was probably my fave genre, as well Deathrock and Darkwave. So it is a mixture of those genres.
3. Did you know each other before the band was formed?
The band was born as a studio project formed by me (Fher Knight) on vocals and instrument, and Nikki Spectre on vocals. Then, since Nikki abandoned the project back in 2016. I kept the studio project going by myself.
4. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
The project is based at Montreal, Canada. Unfortunately I haven't gone out to see live local bands. I am reclusive by nature.
5. Who or what inspires you to write songs?
The people who suffer inspires me to write music, those who suffer any kind of physical pain or mental illness. I always considered myself a kid that was constantly sick during elementary school. The need to communicate and contribute to a society with a large percentage of sick people inspires me to write songs for them.
6. What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
The first album is a fun one. It is a theatrical horror album, lyrics full of madness and Halloween spirit, my favorite holiday of the year since I was a kid.
7. Do you write your own songs? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.)
I do write them alone. I start programming the drums , either with drum kits hardware, or sequences.
Then I write the guitars, bass, and keyboards, the order of these 3 instruments depends of the mood I am the day of the recording session. I don't practice the instrument lines more than 10 times. What I do, I make sure the drums sequences are well set, then I take either the bass or guitar, and I start improvising over the drums track. When I hear a riff that goes with the vibe of those drums, I hit the record button in my home studio, and this way the take gets printed. The same goes for keyboards and bass. So this means, I won't get back to play those instrumentals again. The only instrument I get to rehearse and repeat several takes, it's the vocals. I really love and enjoy the process of singing. These I could come and jam, singing over the previous instrumentals already recorded.
8. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
In 2014 the album debut A Call To Cult was released via a German record label. Then in between the years 2016 to 2021 released 7 singles. In 2023 I released 3 more singles. Then, in April 2024 . I selected 8 tracks from those singles, and I made the compilation, Songs Of The Dead. You can expect new female vocals on new Dead Born Babies songs. I've been working with Katie Cosmos on new material. She has already recorded her first song titled, My Nightmares. In May we will get back to the studio to record more tracks.
9. Do you have any new music in the works?
Yes. I have collaborated with a project from Florida . I am singing in 3 dance tracks for the music project titled Forgotten Spectres. The upcoming release includes 3 dance tracks. This EP is out now on all the music platforms. The first single release of this EP is titled Sorrow Season.
10. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
Yes. Now with the incorporation of Katie Cosmos, we are planning to accomplish a full length album, and start hitting the clubs and venues as a duo band. First we have to record and release a new full length album in order to start talking about touring.
11. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
To consolidate Dead Born Babies as a duo, release a new album, and start looking to gigs.
