Alternative go getters SCARLET RAIN have released some single's, including some recent releases, as well as an album, with an album show set as well. Some more shows and tours may happen as well. So well then, the band says much with us about themselves, music, and more.
1. Can you give us the history behind the band, how did it all come together?
Scarlet Rain was conceived in the Summer of 2011, comprised of two other locals bands, Judgemental and Junk. I, at the time, was dating the drummer for Judgemental and the band had asked me to sing a few songs with them. The drummer from Junk, Oscar, saw the performance and asked me if I wanted to come sing Familiar Taste of Poison, by Halestorm, with his band; which I happily did. This was a whole new world and experience for me, it scared the living shit out of me but I absolutely loved doing it. After the performance I asked them if they wanted to form a new group and that was the beginning of Scarlet Rain. We've have a few changes since the inital line-up, Derek and I, are the only original members of the band. Fun fact, our bass player, Jayzun, is also the nephew of our original bass player and the son of our original drummer.
2. How about the band's name Scarlet Rain, how is the rain Scarlet?
I was tasked in coming up with the bands name, which I struggled with for weeks. The drummers daughter, Vista, who was about 14 at the time, handed me a sketch that she had been working on with the name Scarlet Rain and told me, I think this would be a good band name, so that's what we went with! I originally had it spelled Scarlet Reign, but people kept spelling it wrong, so we finally gave into the "Rain" spelling. And I have no answer for how the rain is scarlet except to blame it on global warming LOL.
3. What type of band are you exactly?
This is a hard question. I think our vibes on the first two albums was definitely more of a southern rock/classic rock vibe. However, with the introduction of our new guitarist AJ and our newest bass player Jayzun, we've definitely taken on a harder rock/metal vibe. I believe we're calling ourselves "Alternative Metal." It's hard when you're on the inside, you don't really know how to describe your sound to people, or maybe that's just me?
4. Who would you say are some of your musical and non-musical influences?
For me, Heart and Halestorm. For the guys in the band, Metallica is definitely their biggest influence. You can definitely get a sense of that in the guitar riffs for sure!
5. How about the songs, who writes the songs, what are they about?
Currently our method for writing new songs is a group effort. Jayzun, the bass player, will usually come to practice with a bass riff he's cooked up. The band will just start jamming, and I will sit and record. I then take it home and create the melody and layout of the song (what riff will be verse, chorus ect.) and then the lyrics. It's a pretty awesome process if you ask me. Not sure there's a lot of bands out there that can work together in that capacity. We are very lucky to have each other.
Our most current album, Bad Monkeys, is very self reflective. There's a general theme about the album about being tested on an emotional, spiritual and mental level. Walking through the fire, and being pushed to our limits and coming out bigger, better and stronger than before. I had been reading the book series, The Four Agreements, and I was very inspired by those works. So a lot of the songs are reflective of my own personal journey to be a better human and to trust my instinct, and to stop listening to the ass-hole voice inside my head. As you can see with my lyric in the song, "Keep It Quiet," "That little voice inside my head, to make me a slave." I highly recommend every human read those books, they are life changing!
6. You have a new single video of the song "Keep It Quiet", disclose it for us?
This song is truly my heart song, it's a very literal pouring out of my inner thoughts and struggles. My idea for the video was to portray living an existence that you were not meant to live. As in, you go to work, day to day, knowing in your heart that you are not meant to be there, and the struggle to accept making a living verses living your dreams and following your aspirations. The opening line of the song really sums up the theme in my opinion, "The obligation, suffocation filling the day, sending out an SOS, is help on the way."
7. Have anything else released you can discuss, any new music as well?
We just released our newest single, "Iris Black." It's a heavy banger, make sure to check that one out! We will be releasing a "reimagined" version of Keep It Quiet sometime in the next month, which will be the last single we release for our album "Bad Monkeys." We have an album release party scheduled for April 26th, we can hardly wait!! We already have the next single written for the new album and we're very excited to get back in the writing mode. More kick ass alternative metal headed your way from Scarlet Rain!
8. How do you promote your band and shows, have anything planned out for this next year?
We use social media for most promotions. Our Facebook and YouTube channels seem to be our biggest draws when it comes to new fans. We haven't seemed to crack the TikTok code yet LOL. We partnered with Curtain Call Records last June to help create some national and international draw for our music. We are currently being played on over 120 syndicated radio stations around the world. We're looking to do a West Coast tour and possibly some other big events this year.
9. What advice would you give to fellow bands doing the same thing as you?
Don't give up if someone gives you bad feedback, use it to feed the fire inside of you. Not everyone is going to like your music, take it all with grain of salt. Always do your best, whether it's a crowded bar, or just your Mom and Dad watching. You never know who is listening and watching.
10. Have anything else you would like to say, future plans, nothing?
We love creating music, we hope that someone out there likes what we do too! We appreciate every single fan, truly, each and every one of you! Thanks for playing our music and for the continued support, it truly means the world to us. Be out the lookout for new tunes, we're bring the rock baby!
