Antlerz Discusses Upcoming Material, New Single, and More Plans!
U.K. rap rockers ANTLERZ fuses not only rock but rap along with melodic passion of hip hop! The band has released a single, and have a couple of EP's in the works as well. Find out what else the band had to discuss from the chat below.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
It’s a project that Guchi had always wanted to do. Growing up, he had a huge love for hip-hop and was part of the early grime scene in the mid 2000's at school. As he got older, metal started to began to play an even bigger part of his life and this of course was everything and more to his cousin and co-founding member Mickey, who had already been on the gigging circuit with his previous band Reign of Khan.
Guchi: “We had both had stints in different metal bands but had always wanted to do something together. So when the opportunity came in late 2018 and we were both free, we decided to fuse the two sounds we both loved so much and bring back the type of energy live music had been missing. When we brought this sound into a room with a full band, it was frikin electric!”
We found Neil and Ignas after losing both our original bassist and drummer in a short space of time. Neil was recommended to us as he came with a strong musical background having played massively throughout China and Ignas had shown in a single audition that there was no other drummer we wanted to move ahead with.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
Guchi and Mikael are cousins (only 6 days apart!) who shared their grandfathers surname “Deer”. As their relationship had always been close, they wanted a name that was going to represent them as family as well as musicians. People always ask us why we spell it with a Z and I guess our answer has to be, Why Not?! Haha it’s just a little bit more badass. :p
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
Antlerz is based out of London and that can definitely be heard in much of the lyrical content and gritty sound we have. The scene here is good but could be bigger! People aren’t always too keen to come and see a bunch of unknown musicians but you’d be surprised what you find. For other local bands we could recommend I’d say check out Crostpaths. They’re another Raprock band looking to make waves out here.
4. How would you describe your style?
We aim to mix grooving riffs with choppy flows to create a sound that is just layers upon layers of energy! We focus on keeping things fresh and each song will showcase the dynamic range our sound can stretch. Its as if Wu Tang had a love child with a RHCP record and then you found out Pantera was the true daddy!
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
We actually just released our debut single “Sole Survivor” alongside our first full length music video from our upcoming EP. We also have a freestyle video out there doing the rounds as a teaser for what can be expected. The main thing you can expect is ENERGY, ENERGY and more FUCKING ENERGY. Music has become so weak these days with people relying on drop tuning and breakdowns to get a big sound. Mickey is a frikin genius on the guitar so he don't need to rely on any of that. What you will hear is gonna be like nothing you've heard before. I'm talking BARS and RIFFS!
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
Well since we are all on lockdown, we have been working hard on creating new material for our second EP. The wheels never stop turning on this beast so expect regular releases from singles, to freestyles to Mickey blowing us away with insane solo teasers!
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
Well… it’s like Mike Tyson said, “everyone has a plan until you get punched in the mouth” lol. The current lockdown and crisis with coronavirus means that all our plans have been put on hold, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t ready for it or planning for the future. Right now we just want to know the people are ready and wanting and we will be there. Go make noise and trust we will come play wherever you are!
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
What plans don’t we have! Guchi would love to do a song with both Corey Taylor and J Cole haha but that’s probably a few years off. The plan is to just keep showing that rock and roll isn’t dead and that when you come to our shows you’re gonna be leaving sore and hoarse!
We would also love to get involved more with the extreme sports scene too as we could definitely get someone pumped before looking down the face of death. Any of you in need of music for your vids, hit us up!
Maybe a record deal too…. Hi Sony. :D
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
Our music is available on all streaming services, YouTube and our website. We also have our merch store launching very soon! All those dope hoodies, shirts and hats you see on the insta are gonna be available for all of you to rock! www.instagram.com/antlerzband
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
How well we have managed to fuse two of the biggest sounds of modern times! We keep all of the intricacies that Rap is associated with and marry it to a sound that hits BIG and hits HARD! I want them to hear everything we have and see that we aren’t a one trick pony and really have developed this sound through through. Lastly, I want them to know that any record you hear is just 50% of Antlerz…. You have to come to the show to really learn what we are all about. ;)
