Before Nitrogen Discover Themselves and the Music They Create!
BEFORE NITROGEN has been a band for a short while, but even tho they have already released an EP, including a new single titled "Found" out this summer with so much more in-store from them! Discover the details about their future plans and just how and where they got their start together.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Before Nitrogen started in 2017 with our lead singer/songwriter Sean McGibany. During a particularly rough time politically and personally, he started writing songs about escaping from the moment and finding hope on the other side, which led to our motto: “Hope is Not Lost.” Our guitarist and co-lead singer Jack Reesman joined soon after, and the trio was completed in 2019 when Joe Perdzock came on board as our DJ/”machine master”/kazoo player/bubble ninja. He’s the “secret spice” that really makes Before Nitrogen work!
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
Prior to starting this band, Sean was in another group. They were looking for a name, and Sean had just learned that the band NSYNC got their name from the last letter of each member’s first name. He tried to do that with his current band and got a B and 4 N’s, which became “Before” (B4) “N.” He was in a chemistry class at the time, and “N” on the periodic table is “Nitrogen,” and the name was born. But the other members of the band didn’t approve, and on that day Sean vowed to start his own band called “Before Nitrogen.” And here we are! If you dig a little more into the periodic table, you’ll find that there’s a deeper meaning to the name, but we’ll let you figure that out on your own…
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We are based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which has an incredibly diverse music scene! We have friends who play in country-folk bands, pop bands, electronic projects, hip-hop projects, and they each have their niche in the scene. Some friends we’d recommended are Clear Pioneer, The Keystones, Derek Sallmann, Fiona Blue, The New Grey, and Endless Era – just to name a few!
4. How would you describe your style?
Imagine if James Taylor was produced by Owl City.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
We released our first EP – Elements – last spring. There’s a song on that record for every season, and it’s one continuous loop of music – just like the cycle of year. Last December we released “Running in the Forest,” which was produced by our friend Tim Wolf. That song really fits our motto of “Hope is Not Lost” - it’s all about perseverance and faith in the future. We are always seeking the light at the end of the tunnel, but even more so in this moment.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
Our new single “Found” will be released on May 1st – you can pre-save on Spotify here: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/beforenitrogen/found?fbclid=IwAR24A5PC9XchxRjdQpZtFo2yPXiTKw2wXGQwD9DK-zeeZlmyyaKR3o-zGVM.
It was produced by our friends in Endless Era, mixed by Vinny Millevolte at Axis Recording Studios, and mastered by Justin Perkins of Mystery Room Mastering. All of these guys are legends in our hometown, and we’re so excited to have gotten the chance to work with them!
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
Obviously, it’s impossible to play live “shows” right now, but we look forward to playing for our hometown again once things are under control. We put a lot of time and thought into our live show – it’s really where the magic happens – and we can’t wait to be back on stage!
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
We are currently dealing with the logistics of not being able to perform, record in the studio, or even rehearse together for the foreseeable future. But, true to our motto, we are hopeful to resume as soon as we can and get back to doing what we love!
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
