Modernized 5-piece band NINTH DEGREE have taken their influences from rock, alternative pop, progressive rock and folk, keeping a modern day twist. With that they have released a single and have an EP expected this summer! The band talks more or less about their music, coming together and what they have planned next.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
We are a 5-piece Rock band founded in September 2018 out of the ashes of Misselbrook and Watt which was a small project between two of the band members Hamish and Cameron. Hamish (Vocals/Keys) and Cameron (Vocals/Guitars) are two of our three vocalists and have been in bands together for many years having been friends since they were kids. Connor (Vocals/Bass) and Murray (Drums) came in to be Ninth Degree’s rhythm section after Misselbrook and Watt disbanded. They were fans of the band and so it just made sense because they knew the material well already.
We played shows and brought out our debut single “Smile” as a 4-piece but decided in mid-2019 we needed a second guitarist to fill out our sound and so we recruited Reece (Cowbell/Guitars) who was on Cameron’s course at uni. Ninth Degree’s goal is to bring a fresh and exciting new sound to the local scene with influences from Modern Rock, Alternative Pop, Progressive Rock and Folk.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
We spent the first 2 months or so brainstorming ideas. We then had a massive list of around 20/30 possible names and got our friends and family to vote on them. It ended up being a tie between "Fool's Paradise" and "Nth Degree" and the band voted for "Nth Degree". Unfortunately, we realised there was a popular song from the 2000s called Nth Degree which would make it hard to google us. So, we went for the next best option "Ninth Degree".
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We are based in Edinburgh, Scotland. The music scene is really vibrant in Scotland there’s quite a large indie scene as well as a solid metal scene so there’s quite a bit of variety. Personally, we really enjoy working with The Marx, Stay For Tomorrow, RumRunners and Still Sinking who are some great local acts.
4. How would you describe your style?
We would class ourselves as Alternative Rock but with a twist. We have quite a range of influences from New Wave, Classic Prog Rock, Indie Rock and even Folk which all help to give us a really unique sound.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
We have just released our 2nd studio single “Fade Away” which we recorded live in the studio before the pandemic! As well as this, we have released another studio single “Smile”, a live album and live acoustic EP, three acoustic covers and an album full of songs (originals and covers) we recorded during the first COVID lockdown. You can expect a strong combination of in-your-face rock along with more laid-back acoustic rock tracks from Ninth Degree. We have 3 lead vocalists and 2 lead guitarists and so you can also be sure to get a lot of harmonies and guitar solos!
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
Yes, we have about 5-10 songs written, and we are hoping to pick the best 4 or so and aim bring out an EP in the summer.
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
Unfortunately, due to the pandemic all our shows have been cancelled. However, we are currently in discussion about new ways we can make content for our fans while we are stuck in lockdown. We are pretty active on our YouTube channel and so will likely try to bring out some new videos there.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Ultimately, we are aiming to bring out our debut album once the pandemic is over and we’ve built some more momentum. Then hopefully we will go on a small UK and/or EU tour to promote the album.
