Hard rock n' soulful band ASILA are hard at work upon what will be their debut album. But have already released a handful of single's and cover too. For now, is the album and more single's expected to be out and about soon enough. The band discusses these matters and much more.
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
We formed in 2018. The four of us actually played together under the band name ‘Revery’ at first, but we decided to rebrand, as Revery has been used by many bands already. Hana, Adrian and Richard all met while forming the band. Taryn came into the picture a bit later, mainly because she lives quite far east of Johannesburg. And we all know what happens in the east of Jo’burg.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
Coming up with a band name is always tricky since any name you can think of in English has already been taken. Even the cool ones like ‘We Butter the Bread with Butter’. So we opted for a Turkish name that means ‘Pure’. Something, that for us, symbolizes the intent behind art.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We’re based out of Johannesburg, South Africa, but currently Adrian lives in England and Hana and Richard live in the USA. The rock music scene in South Africa in general is quite small, I would say. There are plenty of fantastic bands out there, too many to name, but some would be Hokum, Newtown Knife Gang, Dirty Moonshine.
4. How would you describe your style?
We’re quite firmly on the rock/ hard rock side of music. Vocally we have a lot of blues and soul influence. So for someone who hasn’t heard us it’s a mix of Halestorm instrumentally and Joss Stone vocally.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
We’re working towards our debut album ‘Acid Rain’ we’ve released about 7 singles and a cover. We try to keep our songs unique and interesting in their own way, each with their own message. But something that all songs hopefully have in common is that the songs are powerful, catchy and resonate with the listener.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
Our new single HOT BLOODED WOMAN is coming out on the 26th of February! This one goes out to all the strong women! It’s about women empowerment and speaking your truth. It’s especially pertinent in these times and it will hopefully inspire women to speak out. It’s a hard rock song with a ton of attitude. We’re working on a video but in in the meantime we’ll have a lyric video out on release day.
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We got a call from Mr. Covid who asked us to cancel all shows. We had no option but to comply. But on the odd occasion Hana and Richard stream some acoustic performances from their studio.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
In the near not too distant future we’ve got another 2 singles lined up after Hot Blooded Woman. These songs will complete the album. What happens thereafter is in the hands of the gods.
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
You can stream our music on all the usual streaming platforms. We do have a Bandcamp site if you want to purchase music directly. We have some shirts on Spreadshit, so we’ll link it.
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
Hopefully listeners will remember the message of our songs. Hopefully they’ll remember how it made them feel and hopefully they’ll remember that we’re all humans and we should be nicer to each other (and to animals).
