Irish alternative folk singer/songwriter TONY BENN has a debut album, with a few new single's off the next album coming out soon enough. Tony himself talks about his music and what he has next in-line for himself and the music he has created thus far.
1. Please tell us the story about your band and its members.
I’m Tony Benn. I’m from the West of Ireland and I have been playing music since I bought my first guitar when I was 15. I was in a grunge band for most of my teens playing pub gigs ,then I moved to Dublin to study music and spent the next 8 years busking and gigging up there ,after that I started playing and touring all around (Ireland, the United States, some parts of Europe and Canada).
2. What’s the origins of the band’s name?
I just use my own name.
3. Where’s the band based and what is the music scene like there and are there any and you could recommend?
I’m based out of Milltown Malbay, a small town on the west of Ireland. The scene is great here, there’s live music all the time (when there is not a global pandemic) world class musicians and loads of good acts. My favorites would be the singer/songwriter Dave Hope and The Fiddle Case.
4. How would you describe your style?
I’d be a singer/songwriter primarily in an alt folk style if there is such a thing. A lot of people say I’m a bit like John Martin or Luka Bloom which blows my mind altogether
5. What have you released so far? What can someone expect from your works?
I released my first album years ago with the help from Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde) and I’m very exited about my newest single “If we make it through the Winter” which came out the 29/1/2021. I’d like to think that someone could expect a well written and well played song that fingers crossed isn’t too depressing.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
I’ll have a few singles from my new album “If I cross your mind” coming out between now and Christmas so it will hopefully be a busy year for me.
7. How about playing shows and touring? have you anything planned?
I have no concrete tours planned at the moment due to the ever changing nature of our mid pandemic world but as soon as I can I plan to organise a tour of the UK and Ireland. I’ve never played in Wales or Scotland and touring after being in lockdown for so long sounds great.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Well I’ve been writing a lot over the lockdowns, so after the release of my next few singles and -fingers crossed- a tour or two to coincide with them, I’d like to go back in the studio and see how the new songs sound on tape.
9. Where can we listen to your band? Where can we buy your stuff?
Well hopefully soon in a venue near you... but until then I’m on Spotify, Facebook and iTunes

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
I’d like them to remember that I’m not the famous English M.P Tony Benn, I’m their next favorite singer/songwriter from the west of Ireland, who sings upbeat songs in a down beat way.
